After Effects XML Project
Creative ProjectsAEPX is an XML After Effects project. Readable text does not mean it contains rendered video or all assets. Adobe recommends AEP for primary work and AEPX for copies/automation interchange. Check references, compositions and effects after loading.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Missing assets: inspect external image/video/audio paths.
- Fails after editing: compare XML syntax, encoding and modified sections.
- Different appearance: inspect app version, plugins and fonts.
- Manual XML changes break opening: restore the copy and use application editing where possible.
- Substituting a font changes layout: inspect spacing, line breaks and widths in the render.
- Older-version save changes effects: newer features may be omitted; compare a copy with a reference render.
AEPX → AEP / rendered video
- Open in After Effects, verify assets/composition and save a separate AEP copy.
- For video, render/export and verify picture/audio.
- Verify render boundaries, text, transparency, sound and color; retain the editable project and assets.
Renaming to MP4 does not render video; retain the project and assets.
AEPX role and asset references
AEPX is text-based XML serialization, not rendered video with every asset embedded; readable tags do not establish compatibility.
List assets, fonts, plugins and composition settings and retain a reference render for comparison.

Editable transfer versus rendered delivery
A render does not require the recipient’s editing application but does not retain equivalent layers, expressions or keyframes.
Verify original-media and external-effect requirements even in a collected copy; keep the source before resaving in another version.

Handling and security
Review private paths/assets before sharing and avoid unknown scripts/plugins.
Questions and answers
Is AEPX finished video?
No; rendering is separate.
Can I edit everything as text?
Some data is encoded; arbitrary edits are not guaranteed.
Should it be the primary original?
Adobe recommends AEP as the primary format.
Can any video editor open it because it is XML?
It uses the After Effects project structure; generic XML support does not ensure project interchange.
Does Collect Files include every dependency?
Also check fonts/plugins and verify the collected copy on the destination.
