Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Older software fails: check support for the exact camera, not just CR2 generally.
- Different camera-preview color: compare picture styles/profiles and raw versus in-camera JPEG processing.
- Import failure: compare the original on the card and recopy before assuming corruption.
- Unrecognized CR2: match the camera against DPP/developer support.
- Other apps show different adjustments: they may interpret editing data differently; provide a rendered JPEG.
- Renaming CR2 to CR3 does not convert it into another Canon recording format.
CR2 → JPEG / TIFF
- Develop in DPP, then use its Convert and save workflow to output a separate image.
- Choose quality, dimensions and color settings for the destination and inspect the export.
- Inspect the rendered image at actual size for color, exposure, orientation and dimensions; preserve the RAW and adjustments.
JPEG does not retain raw editing latitude. Keep the CR2 separately.
Do not confuse CR2 with CR3
Recording format varies by camera generation. Diagnose the camera and application version instead of renaming the file.
Successful decoding does not guarantee identical manufacturer-specific rendering; a JPEG reference can document the intended look.

Managing development and sharing copies
Distinguish retaining adjustments from rendering them into an image. Use DPP conversion output for sharing.
If transfer failed, compare card and copy sizes and retry without overwriting the original.

Related-format differences
| Format | Main role | Selection notes |
|---|---|---|
| CR2 | Photographic development / storage | Check camera and recording-mode support |
| JPEG | Readily viewable sharing copy | Does not retain RAW adjustment flexibility |
| TIFF | Editing / printing after development | Check size, depth and color |
Handling and security
Review photographic metadata before publication and use official software sources rather than unknown codec downloads.
Questions and answers
Does renaming CR2 to JPG work?
No; develop and export the image.
Are CR2 and CR3 the same?
No; check format and camera support separately.
Does development replace the original?
Export can create a separate file; back up the source and inspect overwrite/delete settings.
Can I keep CR2 when exporting JPEG?
Use Convert and save with a separate name/folder and verify the source remains.
Can I match the camera’s colors?
Check DPP settings and capture conditions; default rendering in other applications can differ.
