Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Editor: read CSS

CSS alone is not a rendered webpage.

  1. Open in an editor such as VS Code and verify CSS language mode.
  2. Inspect selectors, braces, properties and values.
  3. Find its link reference or loading configuration in the consuming HTML.
Browser: inspect applied styles

Use developer tools to inspect loading and overrides.

  1. Open the page and check CSS loading in the Network panel.
  2. Select the element and inspect applied and overridden rules.
  3. Change viewport width and inspect media queries and overflow.
Editing: apply a small change

Test one focused change at a time.

  1. Create a copy and identify the target element/rule.
  2. Change one rule, save and reload the page.
  3. Check desktop, mobile and other affected pages.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • No update: check the HTML link, loading failures and cache.
  • Some rules fail: inspect selectors, specificity, later overrides and missing braces.
  • Mobile-only problem: inspect media queries, fixed widths, image limits and viewport settings.
  • Changes do not appear: inspect loaded URL, saved location, caching and overriding rules.
  • Later styles fail: inspect missing braces, comments and invalid declarations.
  • Background image fails: resolve url() paths relative to the stylesheet.

Save CSS and apply it to a site

  1. Save plain text and align the stylesheet link with its actual location.
  2. Test desktop/mobile widths and review effects on existing rules.
  3. Load generated CSS in real HTML and inspect desktop, mobile and shared consumers.

Renaming SCSS to CSS does not compile it; follow the project’s build process.

Loading failures versus overrides

A stylesheet can load successfully yet be overridden. Inspect Network and element styles separately.

Inspect selectors, order, inheritance and conditional rules before adding important flags.

Checks when editing a shared stylesheet

Shared styles can affect many pages. Test headings, buttons, lists and long text on representative pages.

Check longer text, long URLs and image proportions as well as viewport width.
