DSD Stream File

Audio

DSF stores DSD audio rather than ordinary PCM. Playback depends on file/codec support and the output device. DSD-capable equipment can still impose rate/link limits. WAV export normally involves DSD-to-PCM conversion.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Inspect DSF in a compatible player

Check DSD and DSF support.

  1. Inspect supported DSD rates and channel counts.
  2. Open a copy with a compatible player.
  3. Inspect playback mode and complete duration.
Check output to a DAC

Opening the file does not establish DSD output.

  1. Check DAC and driver support.
  2. Compare supported PCM conversion, DoP or native settings.
  3. Check device status and sound and record the mode.
Create a PCM listening copy

DSD-to-PCM involves processing.

  1. Choose supported output rate, depth and channels.
  2. Export WAV/FLAC with a DSD-capable decoder.
  3. Compare levels, ending and tags and retain DSF.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Music app fails: check both DSF and DSD support.
  • High-rate silence: inspect device rate limits and connection path.
  • Output noise: lower volume and check DSD/PCM mode and hardware compatibility.
  • DAC reports PCM: check whether the application converts DSD.
  • Multichannel file rejected: inspect device channel support.
  • Only some DSD files fail: compare rate, channels and container support.

DSF → PCM WAV / FLAC

  1. Choose a DSD-to-PCM-capable tool and inspect output rate/filter settings.
  2. Export separately and compare duration, levels, channels and tags.
  3. Check complete duration and levels and retain the DSF source.

PCM conversion is not a byte-identical DSD archive; retain DSF.

Check container, signal and output path

Inspect DSF support, DSD rate/channels and the DAC output method separately.

Label a converted copy’s purpose

For PCM-only playback, make a supported output and distinguish it from the DSF source.

Sony references describe specific products; do not generalize their limits to all DSD hardware.

Questions and answers

Is DSF ordinary WAV?

No; it contains DSD rather than ordinary PCM.

Does a DSD device play every rate?

Check model-specific rates and connections.

Does FLAC export retain DSD?

Ordinary conversion produces PCM; inspect the workflow.

What should I include in a playback-support question?

Include container, DSD rate, channels, player, DAC and intended output mode.

Does opening DSF prove native DSD playback?

Playback may use PCM conversion; inspect application/device status.
