Executables & Installers

An executable program, commonly in Windows PE format. Running it can change files/settings, unlike simply inspecting data. The suffix does not determine maliciousness.

Check provenance before launch

Launching differs from viewing a document.

  1. Confirm official origin and product identity.
  2. Inspect version, publisher and signature in properties.
  3. Compare supported OS/architecture with the intended use.
Install the official application

Follow official instructions for trusted software.

  1. Identify installer versus portable distribution.
  2. Review required privileges and installation location.
  3. Verify product name, version and basic behavior.
Diagnose launch failures

Record the exact failure.

  1. Record warning, error code and action.
  2. Inspect OS, architecture, runtimes and complete distribution.
  3. Use publisher-supported repair/reinstallation.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • For “can’t run” errors check OS, CPU architecture and legacy compatibility. Renaming does not fix incompatibility.
  • Use SmartScreen warnings to re-check the source. Do not disable protection merely to suppress warnings.
  • Missing DLL: inspect application/runtime repair.
  • Closes immediately: inspect logs and companion assets.
  • Version unchanged: inspect launched path and multiple installations.
  • Settings missing: inspect storage/migration for the distribution type.

When using another OS

  1. Check officially supported platforms and builds.

Renaming EXE to DMG/APK does not port it.

Installer versus application

Identify product, version and distribution type before launching.

Example: distinguish a downloaded EXE from an installed same-name executable by its path.

Using the product on another OS

Check official builds or web versions; renaming does not change platform compatibility.

Handling and security

Avoid suspicious email/social attachments. A signature alone is not a safety guarantee; verify source, purpose, warnings and updates.

Questions and answers

Can macOS run EXE natively?

Not as a normal native Mac app; check for the publisher’s macOS version.

Does a signature prove safety?

It is evidence about publisher/integrity, not proof of harmless behavior.

Does ZIP packaging neutralize EXE?

It only packages the file; the extracted program retains its behavior.

Does portable mean no files are written?

Portable apps may write settings/cache; inspect documented storage locations.

Does a warning prove it is counterfeit?

Assess warning meaning, provenance and signature together; a signature alone is not a safety guarantee.
