Find where GGUF loading stops
| Situation / goal | Next action | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Model is absent from the list | Identify the main file versus shards or auxiliary files and use the application’s import workflow. | Check destination and the listed model name. |
| Memory error during loading | Review context length and GPU offload; consider a supported smaller model or quantization. | Do not equate file size with runtime memory requirements. |
| Loads but answers incorrectly | Check the required chat template, input format and auxiliary components. | Record reproducibility with the same short input and settings. |

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
LM Studio CLI: import while keeping the source
Requires LM Studio and an available lms CLI. Replace the filename with your actual GGUF and run the import from its folder. Check options in your installed version.
After import, find the model key in the model list and replace YOUR_MODEL_KEY in the estimate command. An estimate does not guarantee successful loading.
lms import "model.gguf" --copy
lms load --estimate-only YOUR_MODEL_KEYExample based on official CLI documentation; this site does not load the model, and no real model was executed in LM Studio during this update.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- Unsupported architecture can mean runtime incompatibility. Compare the model card with runtime support.
- Loading can fail because of RAM/VRAM limits, missing shards or incomplete downloads; the suffix does not ensure runtime compatibility.
- Short inputs work but long ones fail: runtime caches also use memory; review context length.
- Images fail: check multimodal support and the required matching projector.
- Odd responses: inspect the chat template, model purpose and input format as well as quantization.
Before converting or quantizing to GGUF
- Check the source model, config, tokenizer, license and llama.cpp architecture support.
- Follow the official conversion workflow to a high-precision GGUF, then quantize if required. Use instructions for your installed version.
- Compare output shapes, values and timing with the same input before/after export; retain definitions and export settings.
Quantization trades size/speed against accuracy. Renaming a lower-precision model does not restore information; multimodal models may need additional components.
Choosing size, quantization and context
Quantization and usable context length are distinct. Start within available memory and increase context gradually.
A Q label alone does not determine quality. Compare the same task on the actual model and quantization scheme.

Moving a model to another device
List main weights, shards, sidecars, application versions and settings; tune GPU placement per device.
Changing labels or saving quantized weights at higher precision does not restore lost information; keep the source model.

Related-format differences
| Format | Main role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| GGUF | Local inference | Check architecture and memory |
| SAFETENSORS | Weight storage/distribution | May require separate architecture/config |
| ONNX | Inference graph interchange | Check operators and runtime |
Handling and security
Check publisher, license and runtime; accompanying Python code requires a separate trust assessment.
Questions and answers
Is GGUF an image file?
It stores models, including some that accept images; it is not the image itself.
Does LM Studio support every GGUF?
Support depends on architecture, engine and version, not the suffix alone.
What do Q4/Q5/Q8 mean?
They are quantization labels. Scheme and model affect size/accuracy as well as nominal bit width.
Can I rename Safetensors to GGUF?
No. Use a supported model-conversion workflow.
Does file size equal memory use?
Runtime caches and workspaces add memory; measure it with the intended settings and input lengths.
Can I concatenate GGUF shards?
Use the runtime’s supported shard loading or merging workflow rather than raw concatenation.
