KMZ Geographic Data

Maps & GPS

KMZ is a ZIP-based package for KML and resources, not simply a map image. Extracting only KML can break relative image paths; first open the whole package in a compatible application.

Opening steps

Open KMZ in a compatible map viewer

Handle packaged KML and assets.

  1. Load a copy into Google Earth or another compatible viewer.
  2. Zoom to the layer extent and inspect features.
  3. Inspect overlays, icons and descriptions.
Inspect internal references

Inspect an extracted copy in a separate folder.

  1. Inspect the copied archive with a compatible tool.
  2. Record the main KML and asset layout.
  3. Compare KML relative paths with actual assets.
Repackage after editing

Maintain and validate the relative structure.

  1. Edit features and required assets with supported tools.
  2. Save separately using a supported KMZ export.
  3. Reopen elsewhere and compare features/images.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Map without images: check included resources versus external links.
  • Rendering changes after extraction: inspect relative paths and folders.
  • Cannot open: check transfer completeness and archive structure.
  • Features but no images: inspect internal relative paths/assets.
  • Extracted KML incomplete: deliver assets with matching references.
  • Unclear main KML: inspect entry selection and packaging provenance.

KMZ → KML / geographic data

  1. Export selected layers and check whether resources become separate files.
  2. Compare geometry, attributes, coordinates and resources after GIS conversion.
  3. Preserve and verify assets and relative paths, not only the main KML.

One KML may not include all resources; GPX/GeoJSON may lose presentation/resources.

References matter inside the package

Renamed/moved internal assets can break relative paths; validate layout and references together.

Inspect external dependencies and rendering differences

Feature rendering alone does not validate icons, overlays and descriptions.

Use the application’s supported packaging workflow and retain the original KMZ.

Handling and security

Check extraction destination/size; do not run unknown included programs and review shared location/photo data.

Questions and answers

Is it only an image?

It packages KML/resources and may include geographic data.

Is extraction fully offline?

External resources may still need network access.

Is distributing KML alone enough?

Check resource references and packaging requirements.

Is renaming KMZ to ZIP conversion?

Archive inspection does not convert the geographic content.

Why did images disappear after repackaging?

Compare relative paths and internal layout, including added wrapper folders or renamed assets.

Format facts: name, steward and MIME type

Steward / specification

MIME type
Depends on the producer or server; an extension alone does not establish a MIME type.
