Core ML Model

AI & Machine Learning

MLMODEL stores Core ML model specifications, including input/output definitions and model type. Inspection differs from prediction; coremltools prediction uses the macOS Core ML framework.

Identify the model type

Inspect the model specification and Apple deployment target.

  1. Read the publisher instructions and license; record the producer, version and purpose.
  2. Check model type, deployment target and image/array input requirements.
  3. Retain the original and assemble configuration and companions in a working copy.
Inspect with Xcode/Core ML Tools

Successful loading and correct inference are separate checks.

  1. Inspect model type, inputs/outputs and deployment target in Xcode on Mac.
  2. Inspect the Core ML specification and distinguish image inputs from multi-array inputs.
  3. Separate specification inspection from prediction; Core ML Tools prediction requires macOS.
Test in the matching Apple environment

Match the input contract and compare with a reference.

  1. Match feature names/types and use the producer’s preprocessing.
  2. Run known input in a supported implementation on Mac or the target Apple device.
  3. Compare predictions with the source and measure target-device memory and latency.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Prediction unavailable: check the macOS Core ML runtime and requirements.
  • Input error: review image/array type, shape and preprocessing.
  • Results differ: compare image scale, labels, normalization and output interpretation.
  • Cannot save an ML Program as MLMODEL: its separated weights require MLPACKAGE.
  • predict unavailable on Linux: specification inspection and Core ML execution have different platform requirements.
  • Image type error: compare image/array feature type, name, shape and color order.

Original model → supported Core ML format

  1. Establish source model, deployment target and required I/O.
  2. Convert with supported tools and compare example predictions against the original.
  3. Record deployment target, input types and precision; compare source, converted and device predictions.

Arbitrary reverse conversion is not guaranteed. ML Program uses external weights and requires MLPACKAGE.

Single files and model types

Core ML model types use different storage; ML Programs keep separate weights and use model packages.

Readable specifications do not ensure device execution; check Xcode/tool and OS requirements.

When predictions differ

Compare resizing, color order, normalization, names and labels against the source; record conversion precision.

Compute-unit selection depends on model and environment; verify output tolerances and actual device performance.

Handling and security

Use trusted models and legitimate tools; do not execute unfamiliar companion scripts. Avoid exposing training/business information through public converters and check model usage/redistribution rights.

Questions and answers

Can coremltools predict on Windows?

Its prediction API uses macOS Core ML.

Will any input image work?

Check type, dimensions and preprocessing.

Can I swap it with MLPACKAGE by renaming?

No; storage structures and model types differ.

Can MLMODEL become MP4?

It is a model, not media; it requires an application and inference input.

Does Mac success imply every iPhone is supported?

Inspect model type, minimum OS and operator support and test the target device.
