AVCHD Video

Video

MTS commonly names AVCHD camera clips. Preserve the original BDMV structure, not just STREAM files. An isolated clip can play while lacking spanning/date metadata. Use camera-aware import and verify joins, duration and audio.

Preserve the complete camera card

Preserve the source structure before isolating MTS files.

  1. Copy the complete card including its original folders.
  2. Compare source and copied file counts/sizes.
  3. Record camera model, dates and card-specific storage.
Import through Media Browser

Account for spanned camera clips.

  1. Point the editor’s Media Browser at the card copy.
  2. Select the recognized clip and verify duration.
  3. Check video/audio continuity across span boundaries.
Export a viewing copy

Separate camera source from delivery video.

  1. Inspect source dimensions, frame rate and audio.
  2. Export a separate MP4 or other required copy.
  3. Verify duration, boundaries and synchronization.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Many fragments: inspect the original folder and spanning metadata.
  • No audio: inspect the actual audio codec and decoder.
  • Lost date/order: distinguish isolated files from metadata-aware import.
  • Recording shortened: inspect omitted spans after single-file import.
  • Audio gap at joins: inspect card structure and native ingest.
  • MTS rejected: compare camera codecs with software support.

Authorized M2TS → MP4

  1. Identify intended clip/audio, aspect and field order.
  2. Import through the camera structure when needed; verify duration, joins and sync.
  3. Retain the card and validate full output duration across spans.

This is not disc-protection bypass; renaming is not conversion and track retention needs verification.

Media payload and clip-management information

AVCHD has management files beyond the video payload; preserve the card and let a compatible application identify clips.

Validate storage across span boundaries

Compare full duration and scene continuity and retain all original spans.

Label card archives and conversion settings separately from viewing exports.

Questions and answers

Is saving only MTS enough?

Camera management/spanning may require companions.

Does renaming to MTS repair it?

It does not restore metadata or missing data.

Always H.264?

Inspect the actual codec.

How should I verify the imported duration?

Compare camera records, recognized clip duration and scene order and inspect span continuity.

Does arranging MTS files recreate the recording?

Filename order does not guarantee continuity; use supported ingest and validate duration.
