OM SYSTEM / Olympus RAW

Images

A raw image from OM SYSTEM or Olympus cameras. Support depends on the exact camera and recording mode rather than branding alone. Keep ORF for redevelopment and JPEG for display.

Example: a practical checking sequence

Example: new-camera ORFs fail while older ones open. Check the exact OM SYSTEM model and mode, not just the suffix. Use compatible processing or a supported DNG copy, deliver JPEG for immediate viewing, and retain ORF and development settings.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows / Mac: identify camera support first

Support can differ by camera model and recording mode.

  1. Record camera model, firmware and recording mode.
  2. Check both OM SYSTEM and Olympus entries and match the model and minimum software version.
  3. Open in a compatible Camera Raw, Lightroom or other decoder and inspect focus, exposure and highlights.
  4. Keep the raw source and manage its settings or catalog alongside it.
Older software, mobile or unsupported receivers

Choose a workflow that preserves the original raw.

  1. Verify the file at its source and compare the receiving app and version.
  2. Request JPEG for viewing; for redevelopment, consider a compatible update or supported-camera DNG conversion.
  3. Open any converted copy and verify required controls and metadata before handoff.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Unsupported-camera error: compare exact model and required version; the suffix alone is insufficient.
  • Thumbnail visible but development fails: embedded preview support is not raw decoding support.
  • Color differs from JPEG: compare profile, white balance and camera rendering.
  • Special modes such as high-resolution capture may have separate requirements; record the mode as well.
  • Metadata changes on export: review export settings and preserve only required information.

ORF → JPEG / TIFF from the raw source

  1. Inspect exposure, color and lens corrections in a compatible raw processor.
  2. Export JPEG for ordinary delivery or suitable-depth TIFF for further image editing.
  3. Check color, dimensions, quality and metadata; archive the raw original separately.

Rendered output does not preserve all camera-raw flexibility. Renaming is not conversion.

Support checks for OM SYSTEM / Olympus

Check both OM SYSTEM and Olympus entries and match the model and minimum software version.

Special modes such as high-resolution capture may have separate requirements; record the mode as well.

An accompanying JPEG is a separate image; retaining only it loses raw-development flexibility.

Keep originals, settings and output separately

Non-destructive tools may store edits in catalogs or sidecars. Moving only the image may omit the development settings.

Back up raw files and required settings. Choose output color space, dimensions and location-metadata policy for each recipient.

  • Compare file counts and sizes before and after transfer.
  • Check mode and model for selectively unsupported photos.
  • Review location metadata before public sharing.

Handling and security

Questions and answers

Does a visible preview prove raw support?

It may show only an embedded JPEG; verify actual development.

Does failure in old software mean corruption?

It may require newer model support; test at the source.

Is keeping only JPEG enough?

Keep raw files for future redevelopment.

Does support cover every model from the brand?

No; requirements differ by model and mode.

Can I delete raw after DNG conversion?

Retain the source to preserve proprietary information and reproducibility.
