Python Source
Web & DevelopmentPY stores Python source. An editor can inspect it; execution requires an appropriate interpreter and dependencies. Double-clicking may execute it, so inspect unfamiliar files without running them.

Opening steps
Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.
Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Missing module: verify that packages and execution use the same environment.
- Syntax error: inspect interpreter version, indentation and altered punctuation.
- Missing file: check working directory, relative paths and required data.
- Window closes immediately: launch from a terminal and inspect why it exits.
- ModuleNotFoundError: compare the selected interpreter and package installation environment.
- FileNotFoundError: inspect the working directory and intended relative paths.
PY → distributable program
- Define target OS, interpreter and dependencies, then validate normal execution.
- If needed, package with an appropriate distribution tool and test separately.
- For executable distribution, verify target OS, required data and configuration together.
Renaming to EXE is not packaging; packaging does not reliably conceal credentials.
Where to read a Traceback
The last line identifies the exception. Inspect the preceding code location and distinguish configuration, input and dependencies.
Record the actual file and interpreter as well as the line number.

Manage the project around the script
A PY file may depend on data, packages and configuration; inspect README and dependency files.
Avoid embedding credentials and review how working data and secret configuration are shared.

Related-format differences
| Format | Main role | Selection notes |
|---|---|---|
| PY | Python source | Needs interpreter and dependencies |
| PYC | Python bytecode/cache | Different from source |
| EXE | Windows executable | Not produced by renaming PY |
Handling and security
Python code can delete files or communicate externally; virtual environments isolate dependencies, not arbitrary code execution.
Questions and answers
Is Python needed to read it?
Not for plain-text inspection.
Why is an installed package not found?
Check which interpreter/environment is running.
Does a virtual environment make unknown code safe?
No; it is not a security sandbox.
Will PY run without Python?
Source execution normally requires a compatible interpreter; it differs from a packaged executable.
Why does import fail after installation?
It may be installed into another interpreter. Match installation and execution environments.
Format facts: name, steward and MIME type
- Formal name
- Python source code
- Steward / specification
- Python Software Foundation / code author
- MIME type
- Depends on the producer or server; an extension alone does not establish a MIME type.
