DVD-Video VOB

Video

VOB carries DVD video/audio/subpictures. One file need not contain a complete title; IFO/BUP and companion VOBs govern navigation/order. Distinguish standalone playback from DVD-structure playback and inspect title duration, languages and subtitles.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Open the DVD title

One VOB is not the complete disc structure.

  1. Copy the usable complete VIDEO_TS directory.
  2. Use supported DVD/folder playback.
  3. Select title, audio and subtitles and check duration.
Inspect a standalone VOB

It may contain a menu rather than the feature.

  1. Open a copy in a player such as VLC.
  2. Inspect video/audio streams and duration.
  3. Look for following segments and IFO files in the source set.
Export the intended title for viewing

Use media the software can legitimately read.

  1. Select the intended readable title.
  2. Choose audio/subtitle handling and export separately.
  3. Check chapter boundaries, duration and synchronization.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Ends early: inspect companion VOBs and title structure.
  • Wrong language: select the intended audio track.
  • Missing menus/subtitles: distinguish standalone playback from DVD navigation.
  • Incomplete movie: inspect full-title rather than single-segment import.
  • Wrong audio: select the intended language track.
  • Very short VOB: identify menu content or a feature segment.

Authorized DVD title → MP4

  1. Identify the title, audio, subtitles and full duration; choose an appropriate importer.
  2. Export separately and inspect endpoints, joins and synchronization.
  3. Record the exported title, audio language and subtitle handling.

This is not protection bypass; blindly concatenating numbered VOBs may not reproduce the correct title.

Distinguish titles, menus and segments

A VOB may be only one segment; identify the intended title from duration and disc structure.

Validate audio and subtitles after migration

For multilingual media, inspect which tracks the export actually retains.
