First: choose for your purpose
WebM is used in web delivery/browser recordings. VP8/VP9/AV1 support differs by app. Finish recording/saving and inspect alpha, audio and timing when exporting MP4.
Opening steps
Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.
Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Check both WebM import and the internal video/audio codecs in the editor.
- For missing duration/seeking, verify recording/download completion and inspect a preserved original in a compatible tool.
- Browser plays but editor rejects: inspect container and internal-codec import support separately.
- Alpha becomes black: common MP4 settings may not preserve alpha; inspect destination support.
- Truncated ending: inspect stop/save completion and size and retrieve the recorder’s original.
WebM → MP4
- Load into a converter and select an MP4 profile compatible with the recipient.
- Inspect alpha handling, audio, frame rate and aspect ratio in the output.
- Inspect alpha, audio, final frames, sync, color and dimensions.
Ordinary H.264 MP4 output does not retain alpha. Check quality changes and audio-track presence.
Check browser-recording completion
Stop recording and wait for generation/download; a short preview does not prove a complete save.
For inaccurate duration/seeking, inspect recorder/timestamps using supporting tools without overwriting the original.
Check alpha and audio in MP4 conversion
Select video and audio when re-encoding; distinguish a silent original from an omitted output track.
For compositing, verify alpha across container/codec/editor; distinguish it from ordinary video delivery.

Related-format differences
| Format / choice | Purpose and preserved information |

| WebM | Web container; inspect encoding, alpha and recording completion. |
| MP4 | Delivery option without guaranteed alpha in common settings. |
| VP9 / AV1 | Video codecs requiring player/editor support. |
Handling and security
Screen recordings can capture personal data/notifications. Review the full video and audio before sharing.
Questions and answers
Does WebM always contain audio?
It depends on the tracks; audio-only WebM also exists.
Is WebM browser-only?
Compatible players/editors can handle it; verify codec support.
Does MP4 conversion retain alpha?
Ordinary H.264 output does not preserve alpha. Composite a background or choose another output.
Does stopping a browser recording complete saving?
Check generation/download, size and playback to the end.
Can transparent WebM become ordinary MP4 unchanged?
Alpha may be lost; identify the editor’s required format first.
