Excel binary workbook
SpreadsheetsXLSB is Excel’s binary workbook format. It is often used for large workbooks, but size reduction is not guaranteed and it can contain macros. Diagnose format support, Excel version, security restrictions and external links separately.

Example: a practical checking sequence
Example: a sales workbook opens but its calculation button does not work. Check desktop VBA support separately from file support. Verify the author before enabling code. Before saving XLSX, determine whether the button is required, then compare monthly totals and record counts.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Unsupported format: check XLSB support; renaming does not make an XML workbook.
- Macros do not run: XLSB can store VBA, but web/mobile apps or organizational policy may prevent execution.
- Values do not update: distinguish calculation mode, external links and data connections; locate the source data.
- Large or slow saves: pictures, formatting and connections also affect size; binary saving alone may not help.
- Corruption warning: check incomplete sync and backups; do not overwrite the sole original with a repair attempt.
XLSB → XLSX / XLSM: choose by macro requirements
- Open the original and identify required macros and connections.
- Save a new copy as XLSX without macros or XLSM when macros are needed.
- Read compatibility warnings, reopen the result and check totals and print ranges.
XLSX cannot preserve VBA. CSV also loses sheets, formulas and formatting; use it only as a delivery copy.
Binary format and safety
The suffix alone does not establish safety; macro execution and external links matter.
Verify sender, distribution source and expected content without disabling macro protection globally.

Verify more than successful opening
Business spreadsheets may look correct while calculations, rounding or references change. Start with critical sheets.
- Compare totals, counts and dates with the original.
- Check external dependencies and refresh requirements.
- Check required VBA, buttons and printing settings individually.
Related-format differences
| Format / purpose | Use and preserved information |
|---|---|
| XLSB | Binary workbook; can store VBA. |
| XLSX | XML-based workbook without VBA storage. |
| XLSM | XML-based macro-enabled workbook. |
Handling and security
Follow organizational rules before uploading customer data; avoid untrusted macros or external refreshes and keep Excel updated.
Questions and answers
Is XLSB always smaller?
No; compare copies because data, images and formatting affect size.
Can XLSB contain macros?
Yes; check provenance and warnings rather than treating it like XLSX.
Is it always unsupported on Android?
Not necessarily; check the support table and app version separately from VBA.
Does CSV retain formulas?
It normally stores tabular values, not formulas or multiple worksheets.
What preserves macros for sharing?
Check recipient support and save an XLSM copy; retain XLSB.
