YAML Config
Web & DevelopmentYML names YAML settings/data. In automation and service configuration, valid syntax can still contain incorrect keys or hierarchy. Compare with the consuming application, inspecting spaces, quotes and version-dependent types. Review embedded passwords or API keys before sharing.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- Indentation error: check tabs and mismatched indentation levels.
- Unexpected scalar type: check version/parser rules and quote intended strings.
- Parsed but ineffective: check key names, hierarchy and application support.
- A value seems overwritten: inspect duplicate keys and parser behavior.
- Multiline text changes: inspect literal versus folded scalar style.
- Only one document loads: check consumer support for multiple documents.
YAML → JSON
- Choose the intended YAML version/parser and read the document as data.
- Save JSON separately and compare types, arrays, multiple documents and anchor handling.
- Compare strings, numbers, nulls and array hierarchy after conversion.
Comments/presentation details normally disappear; custom tags or complex keys may not convert.
Distinguish text from typed values
Identifiers are different from arithmetic values; compare quotes, parser output and leading zeros.
Example: preserve product code 00123 as intended text and compare its parsed type and leading zeros.

Aliases and sensitive configuration
Inspect resolved aliases after conversion; review credentials in sharing copies and explain redactions.

Related-format differences
| Format / method | Role | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| YML / YAML | Hierarchical configuration | Types/version/indentation |
| JSON | Strict data representation | Comments/tags |
| Application validation | Semantic checks | Recognized keys |
Handling and security
YAML may contain secrets; avoid unsafe object/tag construction and follow the application’s safe parsing guidance.
Questions and answers
Can tabs indent YAML?
Use spaces for YAML indentation.
May I rename YML to YAML?
The format is normally unchanged, but applications may require a specific configuration filename. Follow the consumer’s convention.
Do YAML 1.1 and 1.2 interpret everything identically?
No; scalar typing and other rules differ.
Does valid syntax mean correct settings?
Unknown keys or incorrect hierarchy can parse; validate application semantics and effective settings.
Will JSON preserve comments?
Normal conversion drops comments; retain the YML if explanatory context matters.
