First: choose for your purpose
7z offers compression, encryption and possible split volumes. Built-in support depends on OS version; use a supporting tool. Required extraction space cannot be inferred from archive size alone.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Header/CRC errors can reflect corruption or incomplete downloads. Obtain a fresh original first.
- For split .7z.001 archives, collect all parts in one folder and open the first. Renaming cannot replace missing parts.
- Memory error: inspect dictionary/settings/tool/device requirements and ask for an alternate archive.
- Cannot open .002: collect the set and start from .001.
- Header/data errors: inspect official recovery guidance on a copy and retrieve source data.
7z → ZIP
- Extract and check that all required files are present.
- Re-archive as ZIP and test extraction with the recipient’s tools.
- Verify extracted count, volumes, required content, encryption and filename protection.
Re-archiving can change encryption; extraction also creates temporary plaintext copies.
Encryption and filenames
7z can encrypt filenames; an inaccessible list without a password is not proof of corruption.
Ask about password/variant and explicitly configure encryption/filename handling when re-archiving as ZIP.

Testing, recovery and retrieval
Header and data damage have different recovery limits; passing integrity checks does not certify content safety.
Use copies for recovery and inspect required documents; retrieve a complete sender copy when possible.

Related-format differences
| Format / choice | Purpose and preserved information |
|---|---|
| 7z | Compression/encryption archive requiring memory checks. |
| ZIP | Broad delivery option with explicit re-archive settings. |
| .001 / .002 | Possible split volumes; verify the complete set/first volume. |
Handling and security
Encryption does not prove content safety. Verify the source and avoid automatically running extracted programs.
Questions and answers
What if I forgot the password?
Check with the creator or your records; recovery is not guaranteed.
Can the first split part extract alone?
Normally the complete set is required. Obtain missing parts from the distributor.
Can a header error be repaired?
It depends on the damage. Prefer re-downloading and preserve the original before repair attempts.
Does 7z support imply every encryption/volume feature?
Check tool version/variant; support may cover only basic forms.
Will renaming to ZIP make it mobile-compatible?
No; extract and properly create ZIP.
