First: choose for your purpose

RAR archives may require every split volume. Distinguish multi-part sets from single archives, check RAR5/encryption support and do not assume recovery records guarantee restoration.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows: extract with WinRAR or a compatible tool

Start with the first volume for a split set.

  1. Save every volume in one folder and inspect numbering/sizes.
  2. Open the first volume in a supporting tool such as WinRAR and select a new output.
  3. Inspect completion/counts and retain the source volume set.
macOS / Linux: a RAR-capable tool

Do not assume built-in support for all variants.

  1. Check official distribution/support for RAR5 and multi-volume extraction.
  2. Open the first copied volume with all volumes in the same location.
  3. Extract into a new folder and inspect filenames, structure and omissions.
Mobile / recipients: obtain the complete set

A preview may not handle all volumes.

  1. Save all volumes and check a RAR-capable app’s extraction route.
  2. Ask about space/passwords and retrieve missing volumes from the same set.
  3. Request ZIP or required extracted files if support is unavailable.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • A request for the next volume means a part is missing. Collect all parts together without renaming.
  • For CRC failures, verify the password and download again. Repair tools do not guarantee restoration.
  • Next volume requested: obtain matching sequence numbers from the same set, not a different version.
  • Error despite password: inspect input/format support separately from missing/damaged volumes.
  • Repair fails: recovery metadata and damage extent impose limits; retrieve a fresh source.

RAR → ZIP

  1. Extract the complete volume set.
  2. Create ZIP from the output folder and compare counts/sizes.
  3. Verify volumes, extracted count, key files and password settings.

Recovery records, volume layout and encryption settings do not transfer identically to ZIP. Keep the original set.

Files needed for multi-volume RAR

Collect matching part1/part2-style volumes together; legacy naming exists, so identify the producer’s set.

Extract from the first volume; renaming each to ZIP or mixing versions cannot restore missing data.

Testing and recovery limits

Archive testing finds read errors, not content safety; recovery records cannot repair every corruption.

Repair a copy and inspect required recovered files while retaining all original volumes.

Related-format differences

Format / choicePurpose and preserved information
RARSingle/multi-volume archive needing complete sets.
ZIPDelivery alternative requiring extraction/re-archiving.
Recovery recordRecovery aid, not a universal backup.

Handling and security

Volumes/encryption do not establish safety. Extract separately and assess contained programs/documents.

Questions and answers

What if only part1.rar arrived?

Ask the sender for the full set; a missing part cannot be recreated by naming.

Can another tool extract RAR?

Compatible extractors exist; check version, encryption and volume support.

Do recovery records guarantee repair?

No. It depends on available records and damage; a fresh source may be needed.

Can part2 alone be enough?

Normally obtain all required matching volumes and start at the first.

Does a passing archive test certify safety?

Integrity and safety differ; inspect origin and executable content.
