7-Zip or a tool matching the split scheme

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Identify the full name and producing tool.
  2. Gather 002 and later volumes in one folder.
  3. Use the matching tool on the first volume to extract/join the set.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Distinguish raw splitting from split ZIP/7z.
  2. Check numbering, final volume and sizes.
  3. Do not mix volumes from different sets.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Next volume needed: retrieve the missing number.
  • Not an archive: check for raw splitting.
  • CRC error: verify versions/transfers of all volumes.
  • Joined data fails: verify scheme and original format.

Complete 001 set → original payload

  1. Restore through the matching tool into a new location.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

The first volume alone generally cannot restore the complete payload.

Inspect the whole filename

In file.7z.001, 001 is the volume number and 7z identifies the archive family; numbered backups can be unrelated.

Questions and answers

Rename to ZIP?

It does not change the split structure.

Extract 002 separately?
