Android App Bundle

Executables & Installers

AAB is an Android publishing bundle used to generate device-appropriate APKs. Unlike an APK it is not simply installed directly on a device; changing the suffix does not make it an installer.

Android Studio / bundletool

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Identify the developer/project and inspect content with Android Studio or compatible tools.
  2. Inspect modules, resources and target requirements.
  3. For testing, use the official bundletool workflow to produce an APK set.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Establish publishing versus testing and the intended distribution route.
  2. Inspect Android and device-configuration requirements.
  3. Distinguish upload signing from generated APK signing.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Device cannot install it: compatible APK generation is required.
  • Renamed APK fails: the internal structure differs.
  • Missing device components: inspect required splits/device conditions.
  • Update rejected: inspect package ID, version and signing compatibility.

AAB → APKS / appropriate APKs

  1. Generate an APK set with required configuration/signing using bundletool and test on the target device.
  2. Verify target device, package name, signing and required generated features.

Device-specific/universal APKs need not treat all dynamic features identically; retain the bundle and generation settings.

Publishing bundle versus device artifacts

AAB modules/resources are assembled into device artifacts during generation. Retaining only an APK may be insufficient for other devices or future publishing tasks.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: generate a test APK set for the target conditions and verify launch, resources and features on a matching device.

Do not distribute signing keys/passwords with bundles or send business apps to unknown conversion services.

Questions and answers

Can I install AAB directly on a phone?

It is not an ordinary direct installer; use a supported APK-generation/distribution route.

Are upload and app-signing keys identical?

Their roles can differ by distribution setup; establish the managed signing conditions.

Does every AAB produce one APK?

It can generate device-specific splits; inspect suitable generation settings.
