Sony: Imaging Edge Desktop

For developing data from a supported camera.

  1. Open the ARW folder in Viewer and send a supported image to Edit.
  2. Adjust exposure, white balance and color in Edit; inspect noise and detail at a larger view.
  3. Use toolbar Output or File → Output to set the format and destination.
Adobe: match camera model and version

Support varies by camera even when suffixes match.

  1. Identify the camera and consult Adobe’s table for the required Camera Raw/Lightroom version.
  2. Open a copy in a compatible version and verify full-image decoding.
  3. Adjust exposure and white balance, then render JPEG/TIFF to a separate folder.
Sharing: deliver a rendered image

Distinguish thumbnail display from RAW development.

  1. Ask whether the recipient needs editable RAW data or only a viewable image.
  2. For viewing, render through a compatible developer with suitable dimensions and color space.
  3. Inspect the output in another viewer and retain the RAW and required adjustment information.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Cannot open: check the camera and raw capture settings against supported inputs.
  • Different from in-camera JPEG: compare creative settings and development profiles.
  • Edits do not carry over: inspect adjustment storage and cross-application compatibility.
  • Only a newer Sony camera fails: check camera/mode support and update the application.
  • Color differs from mobile viewing: inspect development settings and output color space.
  • Batch output fails: inspect Viewer selection, destination and naming settings.

ARW → JPEG / TIFF

  1. Develop in Imaging Edge Edit and use File → Output to create JPEG/TIFF copies.
  2. Verify dimensions, quality and color; retain ARW originals and adjustment information.
  3. Inspect the rendered image at actual size for color, exposure, orientation and dimensions; preserve the RAW and adjustments.

Renaming cannot develop raw data, and a rendered image cannot fully restore the source raw information.

Matching mode and camera

The common ARW suffix covers camera generations and compression settings with different decoding requirements. Match the model before choosing conversion.

If only one image fails, consider incomplete transfer or damage and compare against the original medium.

Individual and batch output

Establish one image’s settings in Edit before testing batch output from Viewer; not every photo needs identical adjustment.

Set naming, color space and dimensions; verify output count and samples. Preserve ARW separately from rendered results.

Questions and answers

Can Windows handle ARW?

Use compatible Imaging Edge Desktop or a raw developer and check camera support.

Does generic raw support cover every ARW?

No; camera, compression and software-version support matter.

Should I share the ARW itself?

Use a rendered image for viewing; supply raw and required edits for development work.

Is ARW compressed?

It varies by camera and recording setting; the suffix alone is insufficient.

Will another app use Sony adjustments?

Identical rendering is not guaranteed. Check adjustment compatibility and supply a JPEG reference if needed.
