Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Edits missing on another PC: inspect adjustment storage and required companion folders such as NKSC_PARAM.
- Older decoder fails: check camera and capture/compression support.
- Exported color differs: compare output profile, viewer and development settings.
- New-camera NEF fails: check camera support in NX Studio and the developer.
- Adjustments disappear elsewhere: check support for Nikon editing data or provide a rendered copy.
- Originals disappear after export: review the original-deletion setting before batch processing.
NEF → JPEG / TIFF
- Select images in NX Studio and use Export to choose format, quality and size.
- Check destination and any source-deletion options, then inspect exported images separately.
- Inspect the rendered image at actual size for color, exposure, orientation and dimensions; preserve the RAW and adjustments.
Rendered images do not retain the same raw-editing workflow. Keep NEF and required adjustment information.
NX Studio save versus export
Saving adjustments differs from rendering JPEG or another output. Check whether the recipient can interpret the adjustments.
Inspect quality, dimensions, profiles and capture metadata at export; test one image before processing folders.

Checking the rendered colors
Camera rendering and another vendor’s defaults may differ. Inspect Picture Control and output color space.
Create distinct copies for required print settings and convenient viewing rather than using one output for everything.

Related-format differences
| Format | Main role | Selection notes |
|---|---|---|
| NEF | Photographic development / storage | Check camera and recording-mode support |
| JPEG | Readily viewable sharing copy | Does not retain RAW adjustment flexibility |
| TIFF | Editing / printing after development | Check size, depth and color |
Handling and security
Review metadata disclosure and back up both original photos and adjustment folders before removing anything.
Questions and answers
Does viewing NEF create a JPEG?
No; use export to create a sharing image.
Can I delete NKSC_PARAM?
It may contain needed adjustments; check storage settings first.
Why can the same NEF look different?
Developer profiles and processing can differ.
Should I retain both NEF and JPEG?
They serve different roles: redevelopment and viewing. Manage storage around the original.
Can I rename NEF to TIFF?
That does not develop the image. Use an exporter such as NX Studio.
