Blender Backup

Creative Projects

BLEND1 is Blender’s numbered saved-version backup, separate from autosave and quit.blend. Compare it with the current BLEND, open a copy and save separately. External textures/linked assets may still be required.

Recover a saved version

BLEND1 is a previous save version.

  1. Copy the current BLEND and numbered backups to another folder and record times/generations.
  2. Open the candidate in compatible Blender; if needed use a .blend name only on a copy.
  3. Compare objects, assets and edits and save the recovered result as a separate BLEND.
Inspect autosaves and the last session

Numbered backups and autosaves differ.

  1. Choose the appropriate recovery mode under File > Recover.
  2. Inspect candidate timestamps and whether the expected changes remain.
  3. Verify and save a separate result before removing any candidates.
Inspect assets after recovery

Inspect external references as well as geometry.

  1. Inspect textures, linked libraries and external caches.
  2. For unknown files keep script auto-execution disabled and identify trusted assets.
  3. Inspect rendering/animation and distinguish recovered work from the original backup.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Missing recent edits: it is a previous save; compare current files/autosaves.
  • Missing textures: inspect external asset paths/folders.
  • Version failure: check producer compatibility without overwriting originals.
  • Newest edits missing: BLEND1 is a prior save; inspect autosaves for unsaved changes.
  • Misreading generations: inspect timestamps/content; higher numbered save versions are generally older.
  • Recovered model lacks textures: inspect external-image paths and backups.

BLEND1 → recovered BLEND

  1. Open a trusted backup copy and inspect scene/assets.
  2. Save under a new name and compare with the current version.
  3. Save recovery separately and inspect external assets, rendering and animation before removing candidates.

Previous saves may lack unsaved edits; do not immediately replace the current BLEND.

Saved versions, autosaves and sessions

Numbered versions are created on save; autosaves and last-session recovery differ in timing/location.

Compare candidates by time/content and preserve them while saving a verified recovery separately.

Saving and asset management after recovery

Recovered objects alone may not reproduce rendering; inspect images, libraries and caches.

Questions and answers

Is BLEND1 the latest work?

Normally it is the previous saved version.

Same as autosave?

No; they are separate mechanisms.

Is deletion always safe?

Review required recovery versions and retention needs.

Is BLEND1 merely disposable?

It may recover an earlier state; decide retention after checking current work and backups.

Is renaming a recovery copy format conversion?

It names a verified Blender saved-version copy; it is not general conversion between formats.
