Bzip2 Archive
ArchivesBZ2 contains bzip2-compressed data, not a general multi-file directory archive. If decompression produces TAR, that archive needs another extraction step.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- TAR remains: decompressing the stream succeeded; extract the archive next.
- Integrity error: compare published size/checksum and consider downloading again.
- Insufficient space: decompressed data may be much larger.
- Partial decompression: investigate damage or incomplete transfer against the publisher’s size.
- ZIP application rejects it: check Bzip2 and layered TAR.BZ2 support.
- Huge XML cannot open: distinguish decompression failure from editor limits and use a large-data tool.
BZ2 → uncompressed data / different compression
- Retain the BZ2 and inspect the type/count of decompressed outputs.
- Choose an appropriate replacement format and validate it.
- Inspect resulting folders, file counts and sizes. When repacking, verify the new listing and a test extraction.
Some tools replace the input; work on copies. Renaming to ZIP is not conversion.
BZ2 in dataset distribution
BZ2 is a compression layer, not a data schema. Handle the resulting XML, CSV, TAR or other format appropriately.
Estimate the unpacked size before batch processing and provide adequate space.

Integrity and retaining the source
Do not overwrite the original when a test fails. Record origin, size, hash and error.
After decompression, separately verify semantic requirements such as record counts.

Handling and security
Check expansion size and content origin; an integrity test is not a malware safety test.
Questions and answers
Can BZ2 directly store folders?
Directory collections normally need prior packaging such as TAR.
Does a passed test prove safety?
It verifies integrity, not the trustworthiness of content.
Are TAR.BZ2 and BZ2 identical?
TAR.BZ2 specifies the compressed payload as a TAR archive.
Do TAR.BZ2 and BZ2 need identical steps?
TAR.BZ2 adds TAR extraction after decompression. Inspect any BZ2 output’s actual type.
Can every damaged BZ2 be recovered?
Recoverability depends on damage; obtain a complete publisher copy where possible.
