Windows cabinet

Archives

CAB is Microsoft’s compressed cabinet format used in installers, drivers and updates. Extracting contents is not the same as installing them. Inspect and extract separately, then follow the publisher’s supported installation workflow.

Example: a practical checking sequence

Example: extracting a driver CAB does not install the driver. Check hardware model, OS, architecture and documented setup. Inspect/list and extract to an empty folder without running unknown code; retain split cabinets together.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Inspect in Windows Explorer

Inspection does not require installation.

  1. Save CAB and verify provenance and size.
  2. List contents using a capable file browser.
  3. Extract needed files into a new empty folder.
Inspect or extract with expand

Distinguish extraction from executing extracted code.

  1. Consult the official expand listing options.
  2. Inspect the list before extracting to an explicitly chosen destination.
  3. Review extracted files without running unknown executables or scripts.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Update not installed: extraction is not the Windows update installation workflow.
  • Driver failure: check OS, architecture, hardware model and signature.
  • Another cabinet requested: check split-package completeness.
  • Existing files overwritten: extract into an empty folder.
  • Corruption warning: verify transfer completion and source size.

CAB → extracted files

  1. Inspect the contents first.
  2. Extract into a separate empty folder.
  3. Check file counts and companion cabinets.

Renaming is not conversion; repackaging does not preserve installer signatures or structure equivalently.

CAB can be part of an installer

Windows Installer can use CAB assets; the cabinet alone does not reproduce setup logic. Obtain the complete supported installer.

Separate extraction, installation and execution

Listing, extraction, installation and execution are different actions. Start troubleshooting with contents and target environment.

  • Keep split cabinets together.
  • Follow publisher installation instructions.
  • Extracted files may include executable code.
