Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

GIS for Esri; BaseCamp for Garmin

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Identify directory versus file and its producer.
  2. For Esri connect to the GDB directory through GIS.
  3. For Garmin import in BaseCamp and inspect GPS items.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Keep every component of an Esri GDB.
  2. For Garmin check routes, tracks and waypoints.
  3. Check consumer version and required attributes.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Only one internal file: request the entire Esri GDB.
  • GIS rejects it: check for a Garmin file.
  • Layers missing: inspect datasets and supported features.
  • Phone cannot open: use an appropriate exchange format.

GDB → GeoPackage / GPX as appropriate

  1. Export Esri features through GIS, or Garmin GPS items through BaseCamp.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

Conversion may lose relationships, rules, symbols or route details.

Do not reorganize Esri GDB internals

Renaming/deleting internal components can damage consistency; use the GIS workflow.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: verify layers/counts for Esri or tracks/waypoints for Garmin after identifying the sender’s application.

Questions and answers

Always a directory?

Garmin uses a single file too.

Many internal files after ZIP extraction?
