OSM Data or Vector Tiles

Maps & GPS

PBF can mean OSM binary data or vector tiles. These are not interchangeable; inspect origin and payload rather than using the suffix alone.

A GIS/OSM tool matching the payload

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Identify an OSM extract versus a vector tile.
  2. Use OSM tooling or an MVT-capable GIS as appropriate.
  3. Verify coverage and attributes.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Check the full name and publisher description.
  2. For tiles retain z/x/y and coordinate context.
  3. Use a suitable regional OSM extract.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Archive extraction fails: it is not necessarily ZIP.
  • OSM tool rejects it: check for MVT data.
  • Unknown tile location: obtain tile indices/context.
  • Out of memory: reduce extent or change processing strategy.

PBF → producer-appropriate spatial output

  1. Identify the payload and use its matching driver.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

Vector tiles may simplify/clip features and cannot restore the complete source.

Payload-specific data, not a generic archive

Binary text is naturally unreadable; renaming to XML/ZIP does not convert it.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: handle a regional .osm.pbf separately from a single server vector tile.

Questions and answers

Always OpenStreetMap?

It also denotes vector tiles and other payloads.

Always a complete map?

It may be one tile or a regional dataset.
