ICC Color Profile

Photo Sidecars & Camera

ICC profiles describe device/color-space behavior for color management, rather than storing a photograph. Match display, output or input purpose. Assigning a profile changes interpretation; converting changes color values toward a destination space. Preserve the image before replacing profiles.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Identify the profile’s target

Distinguish image, display and printer roles.

  1. Identify provider, device and creation conditions.
  2. Inspect profile name/type in a compatible manager.
  3. Compare with application and output purpose.
Inspect image color management

Assigning and converting differ.

  1. Inspect the embedded profile on a copy.
  2. Identify the intended source space and required operation.
  3. Use supported color management and compare rendering/output.
Match print conditions

Match printer, paper and settings.

  1. Identify the specified printer/paper.
  2. Inspect application/driver color-management settings.
  3. Compare supported soft proofing and a small test print.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Strong color shift: check unsuitable profiles or incorrect assignment.
  • Print differs: inspect paper/ink/printer conditions and duplicate color conversion.
  • Applications differ: check color-management support, embedded profiles and display settings.
  • Same-name result differs: inspect version/selection.
  • Profile absent from output: inspect embedding settings.
  • Proof differs: inspect proof target and viewing conditions.

Convert an image to a destination ICC color space

  1. Identify the source profile/destination and preserve the original image.
  2. Use the application’s profile conversion, choose destination/intent and inspect a separately saved result.
  3. Inspect the output profile and rendering in the intended environment.

Renaming an ICC file to JPEG does not create an image. Device profiles must match actual conditions.

Assignment versus conversion

Identify source intent before assigning a profile or converting values to a destination space.

Example: match paper/settings as well as printer for a print profile.

Questions and answers

Is ICC a photograph?

No; it describes color interpretation.

Are ICC and ICM different standards?

The names differ, but both can use the ICC specification.

Are assignment and conversion identical?

Assignment interprets values; conversion transforms them toward another space.

Can a printer ICC replace the display profile?

Their roles differ; distinguish proofing/output profiles from display management.

Does embedding guarantee identical color everywhere?

Reader color management, display and output still matter.
