ICM Color Profile

Photo Sidecars & Camera

ICM is a filename convention for ICC color profiles, often encountered in Windows color management/device downloads. It is not a separate image format. Match the intended display/printer/paper conditions; installation alone does not guarantee identical color across all applications.

Inspect the device profile

A filename does not establish device compatibility.

  1. Identify vendor, device model and provenance.
  2. Inspect intended device and profiling conditions.
  3. Compare with the connected device and purpose.
Inspect Windows color settings

Installation and default selection differ.

  1. Add the profile through the manufacturer’s workflow.
  2. Inspect the intended device and selected profile.
  3. Review sample images in a color-managed application.
Diagnose color differences

Separate display and document settings.

  1. Record prior profile and display mode.
  2. Inspect image profile, application management and display conditions.
  3. Compare under consistent conditions and use vendor-supported restoration.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Strong color shift: check unsuitable profiles or incorrect assignment.
  • Print differs: inspect paper/ink/printer conditions and duplicate color conversion.
  • Applications differ: check color-management support, embedded profiles and display settings.
  • Multiple displays differ: inspect each display’s assigned profile.
  • No change after adding: inspect default selection and application management.
  • Wrong profile type: compare device and profile roles.

Convert an image to a destination ICC color space

  1. Identify the source profile/destination and preserve the original image.
  2. Use the application’s profile conversion, choose destination/intent and inspect a separately saved result.
  3. Renaming does not change device characterization or color space; inspect the intended role.

Renaming an ICC file to JPEG does not create an image. Device profiles must match actual conditions.

Align profile and display mode

Record display mode with the profile because characterization depends on conditions.

Example: inspect per-display selection on a two-monitor system.

Distinguish display and image profiles

Distinguish device characterization from delivery image color space/embedding.

Questions and answers

Will installing ICM always fix color?

Device conditions, measurements and application settings must match.

Are ICC and ICM different standards?

The names differ, but both can use the ICC specification.

Are assignment and conversion identical?

Assignment interprets values; conversion transforms them toward another space.

Does a vendor ICM replace calibration?

Individual device state/settings matter; inspect calibration needs for precise work.

Should I delete every ICM when colors look wrong?

Inspect the affected device and previous settings rather than deleting unrelated profiles.
