First: choose for your purpose
MP3 is lossy audio. Separate playback, editing and delivery conversion. WAV/FLAC conversion does not restore MP3 losses; inspect audio and tags separately for incorrect titles/artwork.
Opening steps

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- For truncated audio, obtain a fresh copy. Tags/artwork are separate from the audio stream.
- Check playback settings for speed/volume changes. Re-encoding at a higher bitrate does not recover lost detail.
- Garbled title: inspect tag encoding/app support separately from playable audio.
- Silence/truncation: retrieve another copy, compare players and inspect the source.
- Rough edited audio: repeated MP3 encoding may add losses; use the closest available master.
MP3 → WAV (editing copy)
- In Music on Mac choose WAV import settings, select the track, then File → Convert → Create WAV Version.
- Check duration/level and retain the MP3.
- Compare duration, level, channels, silence/truncation, tags and artwork.
This makes an editing copy, not restored quality; file size increases.
Repeated conversion and quality
Higher output bitrate cannot recover prior lossy data; prefer original recording/uncompressed/lossless material for editing.
Create delivery MP3 with checked duration, channels and level, retaining the master.
Separate audio from tags/artwork
Titles, artist and artwork are metadata; library records can differ from embedded tags.
After conversion, inspect titles, order and artwork as well as sound and review personal metadata.
Related-format differences
| Format / choice | Purpose and preserved information |
|---|---|
| MP3 | Lossy delivery audio with potential further losses on re-encoding. |
| WAV | Editing option, not restoration of MP3 losses. |
| FLAC | Lossless coding that cannot undo MP3-source losses. |
Handling and security
Use an updated player; do not run unknown additional programs demanded by a distributor.
Questions and answers
Does WAV conversion improve MP3 quality?
No lost information returns; it is useful as an editing copy.
Why is the artwork wrong?
Check embedded tags/artwork and library metadata separately.
Can I archive MP3 as FLAC?
Yes, but the source remains lossy. Record and retain its original format.
Does high-bitrate conversion restore the original?
No; obtain a better source.
Why is a saved file absent from my music library?
Playback files and library import are separate; check import rules.
