PHP Source
Web & DevelopmentPHP is executable source, often for servers. Opening a file in a browser is not the same as processing it into HTML. Inspect in an editor; match runtime version and configuration before execution.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- Source displayed: verify that requests pass through a PHP-capable runtime.
- Blank page/500: inspect private error logs for syntax/dependencies, not public debug output.
- Connection failure: check database/configuration/paths without sharing credentials.
- 404: inspect document root, URL and routing.
- Write fails: inspect target location and web-process permissions.
- Only CLI works: compare PHP version, settings and user with the web environment.
PHP → HTML output / environment migration
- Execute trusted code in a matching runtime and obtain the needed page output.
- Review output for private information and handle dynamic functions separately.
- Inspect rendered pages and identify dynamic functions that a static copy cannot preserve.
Renaming is not execution; static HTML does not preserve authentication or database logic.
Compare CLI and web configuration
Inspect the configuration of the failing environment; CLI and web PHP can use different versions/settings.
Example: a file URL and a configured local HTTP environment are different execution paths.

Retain source and rendered output separately
Saved HTML normally lacks PHP source/database; document dependencies, document root and secure configuration storage.

Handling and security
Source/configuration may contain credentials; do not execute unfamiliar PHP on a public server or expose backups/configuration.
Questions and answers
Will opening it in a browser execute PHP?
It must pass through a PHP-capable runtime.
Does renaming to HTML preserve the site?
Server-side processing is not retained.
Should detailed errors be public?
They can expose private data; inspect logs instead.
Why does double-clicking not run the website?
Web PHP returns server-processed output; a file URL does not provide that environment.
Do web and CLI share identical configuration?
Versions, configuration and users may differ; inspect the failing environment.
Format facts: name, steward and MIME type
- Formal name
- PHP source code
- Steward / specification
- PHP Group / code author
- MIME type
- Depends on the producer or server; an extension alone does not establish a MIME type.
