Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

RStudio / R Markdown

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Read YAML and code as text first.
  2. Prepare R, packages and inputs.
  3. Knit a trusted working copy.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Check output format and PDF prerequisites.
  2. Look for objects existing only in the interactive console.
  3. Check data paths relative to the document/project.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Object not found: include code that creates required objects.
  • File not found: inspect working directory/relative paths.
  • Only PDF fails: check TeX/output dependencies.
  • Stale results: inspect cache and input changes.

RMD → HTML / PDF / Word

  1. Knit in a suitable environment and inspect figures/output assets.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

The rendered report does not replace source code/data.

Make inputs reproducible

Console history does not transfer required objects; record packages and data provenance.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: knit in a fresh R session and compare row counts and period coverage.
