Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Quarto-capable editor such as RStudio

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Inspect YAML and code blocks in a text editor.
  2. Check Quarto and R/Python requirements.
  3. Render a trusted copy within its project directory.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Identify a standalone document versus a _quarto.yml project.
  2. Gather data, figures and bibliography files.
  3. Check packages and output-engine requirements.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Command unavailable: check Quarto installation/path.
  • Execution fails: isolate the first code error.
  • Missing images: check project-relative paths.
  • Stale output: inspect freeze/cache behavior.

QMD → HTML / PDF / DOCX

  1. Render the configured format and retain required output assets.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

Rendered output alone does not preserve reproducible code/data/environment.

Displaying versus executing code

Hiding code is not equivalent to disabling execution; inspect execution/freeze scope.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: rerender a clean analysis copy and check data version and result dates.
