STL 3D Model
CAD & 3DSTL represents surfaces as triangles in ASCII or binary form. Ordinary STL lacks color/material and explicit units. Check dimensions and defects before printing.

First: choose for your purpose
STL represents a surface as triangles. Use a slicer for printing preparation and a 3D application for inspection/editing. It does not reliably specify physical units or preserve CAD design history; confirm dimensions with the author.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- Wrong size: inspect units and scaling.
- Holes/flipped faces: inspect watertightness, normals and non-manifold areas; repair a copy.
- Faceted curves: review tessellation and re-export from the CAD source.
- Model is tiny or huge: unit interpretation may differ. Match scale against intended dimensions and units such as mm/inches.
- Holes or faces are missing: inspect normals, duplicate faces and non-manifold regions. Compare shape/dimensions even after automatic repair.
- Colors/materials disappeared: STL is not a general textured-material exchange format. Consider supported 3MF/GLB workflows and retain the source.
STL → 3MF / slicing output
- Verify dimensions, orientation and printer, then inspect layer previews.
- Save a supported 3MF project when relevant settings need preservation.
- Reimport and compare physical dimensions, missing faces and slice previews before preparing printer output.
STL cannot fully recover source CAD history; slicing output must match the printer.
Visible is not necessarily printable
Thin walls, open meshes, overlaps and unsupported regions may look acceptable in a viewer but fail during manufacture. Inspect slicer warnings/layers and settings for the material and machine.

STL, source CAD and 3MF
Triangles cannot fully reconstruct source constraints or design history. Preserve native CAD for design revisions. Mesh edits can change shape, while surface smoothness depends partly on tessellation.
A supported slicer’s 3MF project can bundle geometry and settings, but another slicer may interpret settings differently. Record the application/version used.

Related-format differences
| Format / choice | Purpose and preserved information |
|---|---|
| STL | Triangulated surface; check units/dimensions, with no general material preservation. |
| 3MF | Can hold geometry/materials and tool-supported project settings. |
| STEP | CAD exchange; renaming STL cannot reconstruct design data. |
Handling and security
Review model license terms and printer instructions/settings before printing.
Questions and answers
Does STL retain color?
Ordinary STL does not; extensions need separate support.
Are units always millimeters?
No; check import settings.
Does STEP conversion restore the original CAD?
It does not automatically recover history or smooth source surfaces.
Does STL encode millimeters as its unit?
STL does not reliably encode a physical unit. Compare intended dimensions with the importing application’s settings.
Does STL-to-STEP restore CAD history?
No. Triangle geometry cannot fully recover original operations or constraints. Request native CAD for continuing design edits.
Format facts: name, steward and MIME type
- Formal name
- STL triangle mesh
- Steward / specification
- Originated at 3D Systems; supported by CAD and slicer tools
- MIME type
- Depends on the producer or server; an extension alone does not establish a MIME type.
