OBJ 3D Model
CAD & 3DOBJ exchanges 3D meshes. MTL material definitions and texture images may be separate. OBJ alone does not necessarily deliver a complete scene or animation.

First: choose for your purpose
OBJ exchanges 3D geometry. Geometry may appear from the OBJ alone, but material/color/texture presentation often needs MTL and image files. Extract and preserve the complete supplied folder rather than moving only the OBJ.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- White model: inspect MTL/image paths and material import.
- Wrong orientation/size: compare axis and scale conventions.
- No animation: OBJ targets basic mesh exchange; use an appropriate source export.
- Everything is gray: check missing MTL, texture paths and material-preview mode. Downloading only the OBJ again may not help.
- Rotated or wrongly scaled: verify import axes/scale and source units. Compare dimensions as well as appearance.
- Faces look transparent from one side: inspect normals and backface handling before altering the original mesh.
OBJ → GLB / STL
- Inspect materials, UVs and dimensions, then export for the intended workflow.
- Reimport and compare textures, normals and scale.
- Reimport the full bundle from a separate folder to check references and scale.
STL normally loses materials/UVs; GLB does not guarantee identical shaders.
Keep OBJ, MTL and textures together
OBJ references MTL, which may reference image files. Renaming or changing relative paths can break those links. Preserve structure and reimport in the destination environment.

What geometry exchange preserves
OBJ primarily exchanges mesh, UV and normal data. It is not a complete archive of a Blender scene, rig controls, modifiers or animation. Keep a native project for continuing work.
For STL printing exchange, account for lost materials. For GLB viewing exchange, inspect how destination materials/textures appear.

Related-format differences
| Format / choice | Purpose and preserved information |
|---|---|
| OBJ + MTL | Mesh/basic-material exchange; include textures and companions. |
| GLB | Viewer-oriented exchange; verify materials and animation support. |

Questions and answers
Is OBJ alone enough for color?
Separate MTL/images may be required.
Does OBJ exchange rigs/animation?
Ordinary OBJ is not intended for that.
Is MTL an image?
It describes materials and image references.
Does the OBJ alone preserve displayed colors?
MTL and textures may be required. Inspect the complete bundle and use material preview in the destination.
Why is OBJ missing from Blender’s Open dialog?
Native Open is for BLEND projects. Use File > Import > Wavefront OBJ.
