First: choose for your purpose
WebP supports lossy/lossless coding, alpha and animation. Before making PNG/JPEG for a recipient rejecting WebP, identify whether the source is static or animated.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- If an older app rejects it, inspect it in a supported browser before converting.
- Only the first frame after PNG export indicates an animated source; choose a workflow that handles all frames.
- Cannot insert into Office: check version/format support and export a static PNG/JPEG copy.
- Motion stops after conversion: a still export may include only one frame; decide whether animation is required.
- Background turns white/black: JPEG may flatten alpha; inspect PNG export/background settings.
WebP → PNG / JPEG
- In GIMP, use File → Open and inspect alpha and layers/frames.
- Use File → Export As, choose PNG or JPEG, then inspect the exported background and intended frame.
- Compare motion/static content, background, dimensions, text edges and size.
JPEG loses alpha; a still PNG loses animation. PNG does not restore detail lost in lossy WebP.
Lossless, lossy and animated WebP
The suffix does not establish lossless coding. GIMP WebP export offers lossless, quality and animation options.
Lossless output does not restore earlier JPEG/lossy-WebP losses; retain the editing master.

Preparing web images for submission
Check format, size, dimensions and background requirements and whether a still image suffices.
Inspect fine text/logos at 100% and review reuse rights and metadata before sharing.
Related-format differences
| Format / choice | Purpose and preserved information |
|---|---|
| WebP | Lossless/lossy/alpha/animation; inspect the actual variant. |
| JPEG | Static photo copy without alpha/motion. |
| PNG | Still alpha/text delivery, not recovery of prior losses. |
Handling and security
A saved web filename does not prove the contents. Use an updated editor.
Questions and answers
Is WebP video?
It is an image format that can also contain animation.
Can I rename it to .jpg?
No. The data remains WebP; export JPEG through a compatible editor.
What output preserves transparent WebP?
For stills choose an alpha-capable format such as PNG; handle animation separately.
Does renaming WebP to JPG make it usable in Office?
No pixel encoding change occurs; export JPEG properly.
Is all WebP animated?
No; inspect the content in a browser/editor.
