First: choose for your purpose
AVIF stores AV1-coded images and may include HDR, alpha or sequences. Browser support does not establish image-app/recipient support. Separate compatibility checks from delivery conversion.
Opening steps
Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.
Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- An older viewer may reject a downloaded AVIF. Re-download and compare in a supported browser.
- HDR brightness/color can vary with display and app handling. JPEG conversion does not guarantee identical appearance.
- Dark/washed-out image: inspect HDR, color management and bit-depth support in the same comparison environment.
- Renamed image fails: confirm actual encoding with the producer and retrieve the original.
- JPEG loses alpha/motion: these are format limits; choose output matching required features.
AVIF → PNG / JPEG
- Use File → Open in an AVIF-capable GIMP build; check build support if it is not recognized.
- Use File → Export As: choose PNG for a still image with alpha or JPEG for photographic compatibility, then compare color and dimensions.
- Check color, brightness, alpha, sequences, dimensions and metadata.
Alpha, HDR, wide gamut or sequences can be lost depending on output/settings. Keep the AVIF separately.
Checking HDR and color changes
Different dynamic-range/profile support can alter appearance; compare a standard delivery copy in the recipient environment.
Keep AVIF for color-critical work and inspect highlights, shadows, skin and text before repeated conversion.
Export settings and retained information
GIMP documents lossless/quality, pixel format, bit depth, profiles and metadata; not all choices have equal recipient support.
JPEG for photos and PNG for alpha are delivery copies, not complete replacements for AVIF sequences/HDR data.

Related-format differences
| Format / choice | Purpose and preserved information |
|---|---|
| AVIF | Efficient images with environment-dependent HDR/alpha support. |
| JPEG | Static photo sharing without alpha/sequences. |
| PNG | Still alpha copy requiring color/depth/HDR checks. |
Handling and security
Use updated software and review published metadata. Compression efficiency is distinct from safety.
Questions and answers
Are AVIF and HEIC the same?
No. Common HEIC uses HEVC; AVIF uses AV1 image coding.
Is AVIF always smaller than JPEG?
It depends on content, dimensions and quality settings; compare under equivalent conditions.
Does JPEG retain a transparent background?
Ordinary JPEG does not retain alpha. Use PNG or another alpha-capable output.
Does browser viewing guarantee Photos support?
App/OS support is separate; verify each environment.
Does AVIF→JPEG preserve identical color?
HDR, color management and quality can change it; compare source/output.
