HEIF Image

Images

HEIF is an image container. A .heif suffix does not identify the codec; a HEIF-capable application may still lack support for the encoding or collection features inside.

First: choose for your purpose

HEIF names an image container, not a single codec. It is used for many iPhone HEIC photos, but the HEIF suffix alone cannot establish decoder requirements. Identify producer, encoding, OS and app.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows: encoding and components

Distinguish missing viewing support from corruption.

  1. Save the original and try a supporting app such as Photos; check zero-byte/incomplete downloads.
  2. If components are requested, check encoding and Store publisher/requirements; HEVC may be needed.
  3. If installation is unavailable, request a JPEG viewing copy and retain HEIF.
macOS: inspect in Preview

Check multi-image handling even when the image opens.

  1. Select a copy using Preview’s Open.
  2. Inspect orientation, color, image count/related data against the producer’s view.
  3. Export a separate JPEG/PNG delivery copy.
iPhone / Android: device and app

Handling differs by encoding and device.

  1. Finish loading the file/photo original and use a supporting app.
  2. Ask about encoding and request JPEG if the device cannot display it.
3. Review sharing options and inspect received format, dimensions and brightness.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • HEIC works but HEIF does not: codecs may differ. Export from the creating application rather than changing the suffix.
  • Only one image is visible: the viewer may not support the collection. Retain the original and use a collection-capable application.
  • Renaming to HEIC does not help: encoding is unchanged; identify the decoder/producer.
  • Single-image export loses information: JPEG does not retain a complete multi-image/associated-data container.
  • Changed color: compare HDR, profiles and destination support in the same environment.

Export selected images to JPEG / PNG

  1. Select the image in Preview or the creating app and choose an export format.
  2. Check that required images were exported individually and save separately from the original.
  3. Inspect orientation, color, image count, dimensions, location data and recipient display.

Export can omit collections, auxiliary images or HDR information. Renaming does not convert a container.

Distinguish HEIF, HEIC and AVIF

HEIF is the container; HEIC commonly uses HEVC and AVIF uses AV1. Related containers do not imply identical decoder support.

Identify the device/suffix and whether documentation covers the encoding; renaming is neither decoder support nor conversion.

Separate delivery copies and originals

Choose JPEG for broad photo compatibility or PNG for alpha and inspect quality, orientation, brightness and location metadata.

JPEG may omit related images, HDR or metadata; keep HEIF for future uses.

Handling and security

The file may contain extra images and capture metadata. Inspect the exported copy when sharing only one image.

Questions and answers

Is HEIF exclusive to Apple?

No. It is an ISO/IEC standard; device implementations differ.

Are HEIF and HEIC identical?

HEIF is the container; HEIC commonly identifies HEVC images in it.

Does one JPEG preserve an image collection?

One JPEG does not preserve the collection and auxiliary images. Export the required images separately.

Are HEIF and HEIC always interchangeable?

Distinguish container/suffix and identify the producer/codec.

Can I delete HEIF after JPEG conversion?

Conversion may omit information; retaining the source supports future uses.
