HEIC Image

Images

HEIC is an efficient image format commonly used for iPhone photographs. It usually stores HEVC-compressed images in a HEIF container. If Windows cannot display a photo or a submission form accepts only JPEG, distinguish missing viewing support from the need to export a compatible copy.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows: start with Photos

The HEIC suffix does not establish corruption. Support depends on Windows, Photos, HEIF handling and an HEVC decoder.

  1. Finish downloading the attachment or cloud file. Check for a zero-byte file and whether the original device can display it.
  2. In File Explorer, right-click → Open with → Photos.
  3. If a component is requested, review Microsoft Store HEIF/HEVC packages, their publisher, requirements and current price. Reopen Photos after installation.
  4. If software installation is restricted, ask the sender for a JPEG copy and retain the HEIC original.
macOS: open in Preview

Viewing alone does not require conversion. Export a separately named copy when a recipient needs another format.

  1. Choose Open With → Preview, or File → Open inside Preview.
  2. Inspect focus, orientation and color at a useful zoom. Compare HDR and color-profile handling if another app looks different.
iPhone / iPad: Photos, Files and sharing

A photograph in Photos and an attachment saved in Files have different opening workflows.

  1. Use Photos for captured pictures. Save an attachment to Files and tap it to preview.
  2. Let cloud originals finish downloading over an available connection; a small preview is not necessarily the original.
  3. Review Options in the share sheet. Most Compatible may convert to JPEG; verify the delivered format and quality.
Android: check the device and app

HEIF support depends on the device and image encoding. An Android version alone does not guarantee that every HEIC image will open.

  1. Save the image locally and try the gallery or image app. Check support if an updated app and OS still cannot open it.
  2. For viewing or submission, ask the sender to export JPEG to improve compatibility.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Cannot view this file: check download completion separately from HEIF/HEVC support. Missing components and corruption are different problems.
  • No thumbnail: first check whether Photos can display the actual image. Explorer previews and image applications can behave differently.
  • Zero-byte or incomplete file: resend or download the original again. Renaming cannot restore missing image data.
  • A submission or print service rejects HEIC: export an accepted format and check its file-size and pixel-dimension limits.
  • Washed-out color or wrong orientation: compare HDR, color management and orientation metadata. Compare original and export in the same app before repeatedly converting.

HEIC → JPEG / PNG: keep the original

  1. Retain the HEIC and choose a separate destination for exports.
  2. In Mac Preview, choose File → Export and select JPEG or PNG.
  3. Choose JPEG quality and save under a new name. PNG may suit text or transparency, but photographs can produce larger files.
  4. Check format, pixel dimensions, orientation, brightness and file size, then verify acceptance in the destination app or form.

Renaming .heic to .jpg is not conversion. Recompression and export settings can change quality, HDR, related images and metadata.

Many photos: batch conversion on Mac

In Finder, select images → Quick Actions → Convert Image where available. Choose JPEG and a size; preserve original dimensions when required. Menu availability depends on macOS and enabled extensions.

Preview can also export selected images from one window’s sidebar. Check a few files for orientation, color and naming before applying the same workflow to the rest.

Capture future photographs as JPEG

On supported iPhone/iPad devices, select Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Menu locations and capture choices vary; search Settings for Camera if necessary.

This changes future capture settings. It does not batch-convert HEIC photographs already saved; choose an export or sharing format separately.

Related-format differences

Related-format differences
Format / termPurpose and choice
HEIFA container specification for images and related data, encountered with .heif and .heic suffixes.
HEICA common suffix for HEVC-encoded HEIF images; retain it as the original when supported.
JPEGWidely compatible for photographs; quality settings affect size and fidelity.
PNGUseful for transparency or text; it does not necessarily make photographs smaller.

Handling and security

Photographs can contain location and capture-time metadata. Review Location in iPhone sharing Options. Before sending personal or business images to an online converter, examine its storage, deletion and sharing policy. Local conversion is appropriate for sensitive images.

Questions and answers

Must I pay to open HEIC?

No. A compatible device or app may already display it. If Windows needs an additional component, review current Store terms; requesting JPEG is another viewing option.

Why can a photograph need HEVC support?

HEVC can encode the image inside HEIC. Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance describes both HEIF and HEVC extensions for photos; verify your current environment’s requirements.

Does Most Compatible change existing photographs?

No. It changes future capture settings; export existing HEIC files separately.

Does JPEG preserve every feature of the original?

Not necessarily. Quality settings and HDR handling can differ; keep the original and inspect details and brightness after export.

Why can a shared photo arrive as JPEG?

Sharing can automatically select a compatible format. If the original is required, review sharing options and verify the received file.

Does OneDrive always convert uploads to JPEG?

No. OneDrive’s iOS guidance describes original-format HEIF uploads. A web preview does not guarantee that the downloaded original opens in your local application.
