Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

GIMP: open an editable document

Open a copy of the editable source.

  1. Identify producer/version and prepare a document copy with required companions.
  2. Open the document copy in compatible GIMP.
  3. Inspect layers, masks, text, canvas dimensions and color.
Inspect Layered image editing information

Inspect editable information as well as appearance.

  1. Inspect visible layers, masks and compositing.
  2. Compare images and text with the reference render.
  3. Save a separate native-format copy and reopen to inspect editing state.
Export for another app, web or print

Retain editing source and rendered output.

  1. Choose a supported export workflow matching still-image or animation delivery.
  2. Select dimensions, color, transparency and text/effect retention settings.
  3. Open the result in another application and inspect appearance/required information.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Newer document fails: compare producing/receiving GIMP versions and features.
  • Cannot save PNG: use Save for the working file and Export for delivery formats.
  • Transparency missing: check format support, background layers and export options.
  • Cannot choose JPEG in Save: use Export for delivery and retain XCF.
  • Transparency lost: inspect format and transparent-background export settings.
  • Color/text changes elsewhere: inspect profiles, fonts and feature compatibility.

XCF → PNG / JPEG

  1. Save the XCF source and export the desired format; choose transparency support if needed.
  2. Inspect dimensions, color, transparency and image quality in the exported file.
  3. Inspect export dimensions, color, transparency, text and cropping against the editable source.

Ordinary PNG/JPEG omit editable layers/masks; JPEG lacks transparency and lossy recompression changes quality.

Native saving versus export

Saving and exporting serve different roles; preserve editing information as XCF and render delivery images separately.

Formats differ in retained layers/effects; include native source when further editing is required.

Post-export comparison

Compare dimensions, thin strokes, text, color and transparency; inspect changes from resizing or conversion.

Record reference render, application version and required fonts and verify compatibility using a copy.

Questions and answers

Can I display XCF directly on a webpage?

Normally export PNG/JPEG or another web image format.

Are Save and Export the same?

They serve working-document and delivery-image purposes.

Can JPEG restore the layers?

No; retain the XCF original.

Can older GIMP open a newer XCF?

Compatibility depends on features/format version; check a copy in a supported version and include a render.

Can I rename the native file to PNG?

Use actual image export and keep source and delivery separately.
