PSD is Adobe Photoshop’s editable document format. It can preserve layers, text, masks and adjustments. Viewing, editing text and delivering print or web assets require different workflows. Keep the editable PSD master separate from PNG/JPEG distribution copies.

Opening steps

Windows / macOS: edit in Photoshop

Even the original application may render differently when fonts or linked resources are missing. Start with a copy and a finished reference image.

  1. Launch Photoshop → File → Open. If prompted about color profiles, check the intended use and producer’s instructions.
  2. Use Window → Layers to inspect visibility, groups, type layers, masks and Smart Objects.
  3. Resolve missing-font and linked-resource notices before editing. Compare line breaks, missing images and effects with the reference.
  4. Save under a new name, reopen it and verify that the required editable information remains.
Without Photoshop: inspect in Photopea

A browser-based option for PSD inspection. Successful opening is not proof of full compatibility; save a separately named copy.

  1. Open the official Photopea site and select a PSD copy through File → Open.
  2. Compare layers and the finished reference, paying particular attention to effects, text and Smart Objects.
  3. Use File → Save as PSD for an editable copy, or File → Export As for PNG/JPG. Avoid overwriting the original.
Phone: request a viewing export

A large document or complex layer structure may be difficult to edit accurately on a phone.

  1. For viewing, ask the producer for a PNG, JPEG or PDF reference.
  2. For editing, confirm PSD and feature support in the chosen app; compare important deliverables on a computer too.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Changed text or line breaks: review missing-font notices. Distinguish Adobe Fonts activation from separately licensed fonts; ask the producer for the exact font name.
  • Missing Smart Object content: an externally linked source may have moved. Obtain the resource and relink it; changing the extension cannot restore it.
  • Different color or effects in another app: compare adjustments, blending modes, masks and profiles. Request a flattened reference when necessary.
  • Cannot save or document is too large: check disk space and permissions. Documents above 2GB or 30,000 pixels in width/height may require PSB or another large-document format.
  • Not a valid Photoshop document: check transfer completion, producing application and backups. Recovery may yield only a flattened image rather than editable layers.
  • Very slow opening: review dimensions, layers, linked resources and available memory. Consider a smaller viewing export before flattening the editable master.

PSD → PNG / JPEG: export a distribution copy

  1. Save the layered PSD and confirm visible layers and export scope.
  2. Choose the appropriate File → Export command. Review transparency for PNG, or background and quality for JPEG.
  3. For web use, verify requested pixel dimensions and sRGB settings. For print, follow the printer’s profile, resolution and format requirements.
  4. Save separately and reopen the export to check text, color, dimensions, transparency and unintended information.

PNG/JPEG normally do not retain editable PSD layers, and JPEG does not retain transparency. PDF settings may retain editing data; distinguish final-artwork delivery from editable-master delivery.

Before handing over PSD: fonts, assets and a reference

  • Use File → Package where appropriate to gather linked assets. Embedding resources is another option; agree on file size and future editing needs.
  • Provide exact font names and required versions. Font-file redistribution depends on licensing. If text is rasterized, retain a separately editable master.
  • Include a finished PNG/JPEG reference for text, color and layer visibility; have the recipient compare the opened PSD against it.
  • Review hidden layers, masked-out content, embedded images and personal data. Invisible content can still exist in the file.

Related-format differences

Related-format differences
FormatSuitable use / limitations
PSDA Photoshop editing master with revisitable layers and type.
PSBA large Photoshop document; verify recipient support rather than renaming to PSD.
PNGFinished-image sharing with transparency; normally no original editable layer structure.
JPEGPhoto/web distribution without transparency; compression affects quality.
PDFViewing/print delivery; review pages, color and retained editing information.

Handling and security

Business PSDs may contain unpublished work, personal information and source images. Review distribution copies and follow confidentiality rules for the chosen app or service. Do not execute unknown font installers or plug-ins to resolve missing-font notices.

Questions and answers

Can I view PSD without Photoshop?

Compatible apps such as Photopea are options, but full reproduction is not guaranteed. A finished reference from the producer helps with viewing.

Does opening PSD guarantee editable text?

The file needs an editable type layer and compatible fonts/features. Rasterized lettering may no longer be editable as the original text.

Can JPEG restore the original layers?

Normally not. You need the PSD or a backup from before flattening.

Does hiding a layer remove its content?

No. Its content can remain in PSD; review a distribution copy containing only intended information or a final-image export.

Can I rename PSB to PSD?

Renaming does not resolve format or size-limit differences. Resave through a compatible application and review dimensions, size and editable data.

Do different colors or text mean corruption?

Fonts, profiles, linked assets or app compatibility may explain differences. Compare a reference and review notices before concluding corruption.
