Word AutoRecover File

Documents

ASD is used by Word AutoRecover. It is a recovery candidate from a saved interval, not an ordinary delivery document. Recovery depends on Word version, settings and the shutdown circumstances; preserve a copy before investigating.

Microsoft Word recovery tools

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Start Word and look for the candidate in Document Recovery.
  2. Compare candidate timestamps and content before choosing a version.
  3. Save recovered content as a separately named DOCX and reopen it.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Copy the ASD and record its original location and timestamp.
  2. Check the official unsaved-document recovery workflow for your Word version.
  3. Independently inspect the original DOCX, cloud version history and backups.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Multiple candidates: compare actual paragraphs and edits as well as timestamps.
  • Latest edits absent: changes after the recovery interval may not have been retained.
  • Cannot open: distinguish another use of the suffix, an empty file and corruption.
  • Original missing: inspect normal backups and cloud history separately.

ASD → recovered DOCX

  1. If Word opens the recovery candidate, use its normal save workflow to create a new DOCX.
  2. Check text, graphics, comments and recent edits before preparing a delivery copy.

Recovery and completeness are not guaranteed; opening a candidate does not prove every edit was recovered.

AutoRecover is separate from normal saving

AutoRecover, cloud AutoSave, manual saving and backups serve different roles. Finding ASD does not establish that it is the latest manuscript; compare final paragraphs, recent edits, tables and images.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: after recovering a 20-page manuscript, check the last added heading and edited table rather than page count alone; compare other candidates or history for missing work.

Handling and security

Questions and answers

Can I submit ASD as the document?

Recover it in Word and deliver a normal DOCX or PDF.

Does no ASD mean nothing can be recovered?

The original, cloud history or normal backups may still exist.

Is the newest recovery candidate complete?

Compare recent edits and final paragraphs, not time alone; changes after the recovery interval may be absent.
