DjVu Scanned Document

Documents

DJVU is used for compact scanned books and documents. It may contain searchable hidden text as well as page images. A document can be bundled into one file or use an index referencing separate page files; check the complete delivery.

Opening steps

DjView / DjVuLibre-compatible viewer

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open a document copy in DjView or another compatible viewer.
  2. Inspect first/last pages, thumbnails and the document outline.
  3. Test search/copy to distinguish text-enabled pages from image-only pages.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Check whether the producer provides a complete set of page files.
  2. For an indirect document, preserve folder structure and reference locations.
  3. Check edition, volume and missing pages.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Browser will not open it: use a DjVu-capable app rather than assuming PDF support.
  • Pages missing: check that only the index was not delivered.
  • Search fails: image-only content requires a separate OCR workflow.
  • Copied text is wrong: compare OCR output against the page image.

DJVU → PDF / page images

  1. Use viewer export/printing or DjVuLibre conversion with the required pages and resolution.
  2. After output, check page count/order, small text, illustrations and search results.

Output can be larger, and text layers, links and outlines depend on the export method.

Check text layers separately from page images

A visible page image may have a separate text layer. Readability does not imply searchability, and searchable OCR need not be accurate.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: for an old booklet exported to PDF, inspect the cover, an illustration and final page, then search a proper name to assess text-layer availability and errors.
