First: choose for your purpose
EPUB is an ebook format. Reflowable books adapt to text size, while fixed-layout books preserve page placement. Check whether the book is an ordinary EPUB or needs a purchase service’s authorization, then try a compatible reader.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.
Troubleshooting by symptom
- Purchased book fails: check DRM, account and device requirements with the vendor.
- Broken layout: inspect reflow behavior and reader support.
- Missing navigation/images: inspect download completeness and resource references.
- DRM or store authorization is required: generic EPUB support is insufficient. Use the seller’s authorized application/account.
- Larger text does not reflow the page: it may be fixed layout. Distinguish zooming from reflow and use a suitable reader.
- Navigation or typography differs: readers vary in CSS/vertical-text support. Compare the original in another compatible reader before blaming conversion.
EPUB → PDF / another supported ebook format
- Check rights/DRM and convert only supported books using calibre’s conversion workflow.
- Inspect page size, navigation, images and any vertical-text behavior afterward.
- Check chapter order, navigation links, notes and figures at several points. Conversion does not change purchase rights or DRM conditions.
calibre does not directly convert DRM-protected books; PDF loses reflowable reading behavior.
Reflow, fixed layout and PDF
Text-centered books benefit from reflow. Comics, photo books and teaching materials may use fixed layouts. EPUB does not guarantee freely reflowable text.
PDF preserves page layout but may require more zooming on small screens. Choose page dimensions/margins when converting and inspect intermediate chapters and figures.

Check DRM and the delivery route
Format conversion is not a universal solution. Read protected purchases through their authorized service. Even unprotected books may lose equivalent covers, navigation, annotations or reading positions.
For Kindle delivery, consult Send to Kindle’s format list. Do not confuse copying an EPUB by USB with sending it through a conversion service.

Questions and answers
Is every EPUB reflowable?
No; fixed-layout EPUBs also exist.
Does renaming to ZIP make it readable?
Inspecting package files differs from reading the book.
Can any reader open a purchased EPUB?
DRM and vendor conditions can limit access.
Can I extract EPUB because it is ZIP-based?
Inspection is possible, but editing and repacking can break the book. Use an EPUB reader for reading and retain the original.
Can I copy EPUB directly to Kindle?
Direct device copying and Send to Kindle differ. Use Amazon’s supported delivery procedure and inspect the result on the device.
