First: choose for your purpose

AZW3 is a Kindle-family ebook format. Purchased/protected books and your own unprotected books need different workflows. Check device transfer separately from Send to Kindle support; renaming AZW3 to EPUB is not conversion.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows / Mac: read unprotected books

Check whether calibre can read the book.

  1. Keep the original AZW3 and add a copy to calibre.
  2. Open in the viewer and inspect cover, navigation, text size and images.
  3. If protection prevents opening, use the authorized purchase-service reader rather than continuing conversion.
Kindle device: check USB transfer conditions

Transfer procedures can depend on device generation and host OS.

  1. Check your model’s supported formats and Amazon’s current USB transfer procedure.
  2. Copy a supported unprotected book to the prescribed location, using the model-specific transfer method on the host computer.
  3. Safely disconnect and inspect the library. If missing, check format, protection, folder and device model.
Other readers: convert eligible books to EPUB

Choose a format supported by the destination.

  1. Select an eligible unprotected book in calibre and open Convert books.
  2. Choose EPUB or another supported output while retaining the source.
  3. Inspect navigation, illustrations, notes and typography in the intended reader.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Email transfer fails: distinguish local AZW3 support from accepted service formats.
  • Not listed: inspect transfer location, device generation, protection and library filters.
  • Different layout: check fixed/reflowable layout, fonts and reader settings.
  • AZW3 cannot be selected in Send to Kindle: check its format list. USB-compatible formats and service inputs are not identical.
  • A purchased book will not convert in calibre: protection may restrict it. Check the authorized purchase account and reader/device.
  • Book missing on the device: verify model support, transfer location, completeness and protection. Do not retry by merely renaming it.

Unprotected AZW3 → EPUB / PDF

  1. Select the book in calibre and export a separate copy in the intended format.
  2. Check navigation/text sizing in EPUB or page dimensions/margins/figures in PDF.
  3. Verify on the actual destination reader and preserve access to original annotations/service features.

Do not bypass protection; reading positions and store-specific features may not carry over.

Send to Kindle versus USB copying

Amazon’s delivery service has its own input format list. Device AZW3 support does not imply Send to Kindle accepts AZW3. Check the current list and convert only eligible unprotected books when required.

Preserve the original separately from reading data

Text and images may survive conversion without equivalent highlights, notes, reading positions or service features. Keep the original/service library and preserve notes through supported methods.

PDF conversion creates a page layout. Inspect searchable text, figure clarity, heading breaks and margins on the actual display.
