MOBI eBook

eBooks

MOBI is a legacy ebook format. Reflowable text and image-based books behave differently when converted. Distinguish protected purchases from your own unprotected documents, and check current Amazon submission/transfer formats.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Read an existing book

Reading support and publishing acceptance differ.

  1. Identify provenance and DRM status.
  2. Add a copy to a compatible reader.
  3. Inspect cover, contents, images and sample chapters.
Migrate a convertible book

Follow rights and protection restrictions.

  1. Add an eligible original to a compatible converter such as calibre.
  2. Choose an output supported by the destination reader.
  3. Compare contents, line breaks, ruby text and illustrations.
Find a publishing source

Check current publishing requirements before submission.

  1. Check current accepted formats at the publishing service.
  2. Locate editable source or a supported EPUB.
  3. Use the required previewer to inspect layout, text and contents.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Transfer rejected: check supported formats and prepare an accepted format such as EPUB for an unprotected manuscript.
  • Duplicate contents: distinguish inline contents from navigation metadata; test chapter navigation.
  • Text will not enlarge: check whether pages are images/fixed layout and inspect resolution.
  • Images missing: compare source illustrations chapter by chapter.
  • Cannot return from notes: inspect navigation in the destination reader.
  • Duplicate cover: distinguish inserted cover and an existing cover page.

Unprotected MOBI → EPUB

  1. Select the book in calibre and create a separate EPUB through Convert books.
  2. Check cover, navigation, text, illustrations and chapter order on the destination reader.
  3. Verify navigation through the final chapter on the destination reader.

This is not DRM removal; layout/annotations may not transfer completely. Retain the source.

Reading, delivery and publishing

Check the official workflow for each purpose rather than inferring service support from local reading.

Example: review illustrated chapters, notes and the ending as well as the first pages.

Questions and answers

Can I submit MOBI to current KDP?

Amazon has ended MOBI submissions; prepare a currently accepted manuscript.

Does renaming make EPUB?

No; conversion and validation are needed.

Can every purchased book be converted?

Protection and terms matter; follow the authorized provider workflow.

Can a readable legacy book still be rejected for publication?

Reader compatibility does not determine submission acceptance; follow current publishing rules.

Should I keep only the converted EPUB?

Keep the original and editable source because layout or navigation can change.
