eBooks

CBZ packages comic page images in ZIP. Searchable text is not guaranteed, and readable zoom depends on image resolution. Inspect filename sorting, reading direction and spreads when pages appear out of order.

Read as a comic

The reader displays page images from a ZIP archive.

  1. Add a copy to a compatible comic reader.
  2. Inspect cover, page count and reading direction.
  3. Verify spreads and final-page ordering.
Inspect image ordering

Inspect an archive copy and retain the original.

  1. List folders and image names with an archive tool.
  2. Check whether numbers such as 1, 2 and 10 sort as intended.
  3. If renumbering, use consistent numbering and verify the copy.
Prepare another reading format

Compare image quality and page layout.

  1. Check the recipient’s supported formats.
  2. Export separately through a compatible converter.
  3. Compare ordering, spreads, margins and small lettering.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Order becomes 1,10,2: inspect filename sorting and zero-padded page names.
  • Blurry text: inspect source resolution; zooming/export does not add detail.
  • Blank/duplicate pages: distinguish hidden files/thumbnails from actual pages.
  • Spread splits: compare source images and reader spread mode.
  • Wrong cover: inspect first image and cover metadata handling.
  • Specific page fails: inspect its image format and integrity.

CBZ → PDF / page images

  1. Extract images from a copy and verify names/count.
  2. Create the destination with deliberate order/spreads and check cropping/recompression.
  3. Compare cover, total pages and ending in the intended reading order.

An image-only PDF normally has no searchable text; review OCR errors if OCR is added.

Check ordering in the target reader

Record cover, spreads and ending before changing names; compare them after export.

Example: verify the target reader’s order for names such as 001.jpg, 002.jpg, 010.jpg.

Separate image quality from archive size

Extraction differs from re-encoding; review line art and small text when conversion reduces image size.

Questions and answers

Is CBZ different from ZIP?

Usually it is ZIP named for comic readers; page structure/order still matter.

Can I search the text?

Image-only pages need OCR or other text metadata.

May I change page names?

Retain the original and test ordering on a copy.

Will a vertical comic display like page-based manga?

Reader scrolling/page modes matter; inspect how the source images are divided.

What should I check when repackaging?

Verify folders, names and ordering, including unintended extra content.
