Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

Use File → Open From in draw.io.
Choose between opening separately and importing into a diagram.
Inspect pages, layers, links and shape text.

Inspect the received file and its requirements

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Not a diagram: check that a download is not an HTML error page.
Only a flat image: request embedded diagram data or the original.
Content missing: inspect other pages and hidden layers.
Cannot save: preserve a local copy and check storage permissions.

DRAWIO → PDF / SVG / PNG

Export the desired format and inspect the include-diagram-data option when re-editing matters.
Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

A plain PNG/PDF does not guarantee editable diagram shapes.

Open, import and place an image

Placing a bitmap differs from loading an editable diagram; provide DRAWIO when the recipient must alter connectors.
