Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Microsoft Visio

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open a VSDX copy inside Visio.
  2. Inspect pages, connectors and shape data.
  3. For web use, check the subscription and supported diagram types.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Ask which Visio version and features were used.
  2. Check external data links and fonts.
  3. Decide whether viewing or full shape-data editing is required.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Web editing unavailable: check licensing and desktop-only features.
  • Connectors shift: compare fonts and alternative-app compatibility.
  • Refresh fails: check access to external data sources.
  • Old Visio cannot open it: request a compatible save or PDF.

VSDX → PDF / legacy VSD

  1. Export PDF for reading or use supported VSD saving for older editors.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

Legacy saving may alter features; PDF does not replace editable shape data.

VSDX and macros

VSDX is not the VBA macro-enabled suffix, but that alone does not establish the trustworthiness of links or embedded objects.

Worked example: checks before handoff

Example: compare every page and legend with a reference PDF before editing connectors and labels in a copy.

Questions and answers

VSDM is the macro-enabled drawing format.

Is ZIP packaging abnormal?

It is a package of XML parts; manual modification is not the first repair step.
