Legacy Visio Drawing

Documents

VSD is the legacy binary Visio drawing format. Renaming it to VSDX does not migrate it; preserve the original and a visual reference first.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Microsoft Visio desktop

Preserve the original and inspect a working copy in a compatible application.

  1. Open a copy in compatible desktop Visio.
  2. Inspect compatibility-mode and conversion notices.
  3. Save a separate VSDX if needed and compare it with the original.
Inspect the received file and its requirements

Establish dependencies and settings before proceeding.

  1. Check saved version, protection and accompanying stencils.
  2. Record pages, background pages and external links.
  3. Check VSD support in the exact web plan before upload.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Cannot open in Microsoft 365 web Visio: check VSD plan support.
  • Shapes change after conversion: compare against the old drawing and PDF.
  • Shape data missing: inspect fields shape by shape.
  • Print extent differs: compare paper, scale and page breaks.

VSD → VSDX / PDF

  1. Use Visio conversion/Save As to create VSDX and a separate reading PDF.
  2. Reopen the output and check it against the preservation points in this guide before handoff.

Conversion to VSDX does not guarantee editing in every web plan.

Renaming does not change the binary format

Visio must perform the format conversion. Legacy drawings may depend on external resources or custom stencils, so appearance alone does not prove completeness.

Worked example: checks before handoff
