First: choose for your purpose

DWG is a CAD drawing. Choose a viewer for inspection, compatible CAD for editing or PDF for page review. Referenced drawings, images and fonts may be needed, so preserve the supplied folder structure.

Opening steps

Choose your environment or purpose to see its steps.

Windows: view in DWG TrueView

Viewing is distinct from CAD editing.

  1. Check system requirements and obtain DWG TrueView from Autodesk.
  2. Use Open to select the drawing and preserve any supplied references.
  3. Inspect model/layout views, layers, dimensions, text and external references.
Mac: use compatible CAD or a PDF

Do not assume TrueView has a native Mac edition.

  1. DWG TrueView is for Windows. Check DWG version support in your Mac-compatible CAD application.
  2. Copy the drawing and references, open in the supported application and save edits separately.
  3. For review only, request a PDF with the intended paper/scale and compare drawing number and revision.
Web / mobile: check confidentiality

Confirm whether cloud uploading is allowed.

  1. Check Autodesk’s supported web/mobile viewing options and their terms.
  2. For uploads, verify organizational approval and handling of references.
  3. Do not infer dimensional accuracy from appearance alone; compare units, scale, notes and the source drawing.

Menu labels and support vary by app, OS and version. Preserve the original before making changes.

Troubleshooting by symptom

  • Older app fails: compare save-version support.
  • Missing geometry/text: inspect references, fonts and hidden/frozen layers.
  • Wrong printed scale: check units, paper, layout and scaling.
  • Objects are missing: inspect external references, hidden/frozen layers and model/layout differences rather than deleting drawing data.
  • Text uses substitute fonts: required fonts/support files may be missing. Obtain permitted resources from the author.
  • Older CAD cannot open it: check the saved DWG version and create a compatible copy using DWG Convert or a supported route. Inspect newer features after conversion.

DWG → older version / PDF

  1. Use DWG Convert to create a compatible-version copy.
  2. Inspect paper, scale, text and layers in a PDF export.
  3. Compare layers, references, dimensions and text before/after conversion, and preserve the source DWG.

Legacy saves may alter newer features; PDF cannot replace editable CAD.

Resources needed when sharing drawings

Drawings may depend on other DWGs, images, line types and fonts. Moving only the main file can leave missing content. Request the reference bundle and a review PDF from the author.

Check dimensions, units and plot scale

Model-space length, viewport scale and PDF print scaling are distinct. Unit differences or fit-to-page printing can change measured results. Check dimension annotations and CAD units.

For PDF sharing, check paper size, orientation, plot area and line weights. Retain the DWG for CAD editing alongside the review copy.

Questions and answers

Does TrueView replace authoring CAD?

Distinguish viewing/conversion from editing.

Is the DWG alone sufficient?

External references/fonts may be needed.

Is PDF automatically to scale?

Check export and printer scaling.

Can I edit drawings with DWG TrueView?

It is for viewing, plotting and version conversion. Use compatible CAD for ordinary drawing editing.

Can I install DWG TrueView natively on Mac?

TrueView targets Windows. Use a Mac-compatible CAD application, an approved web viewer or a PDF supplied by the author.
